Your Favorite EnemiesのメンバーであるAlex Foster（ヴォーカル）、Jeff Beaulieu（ギター）、Sef（ギター）、Ben Lemelin（ベース）、Miss Isabel（ヴォーカル兼キーボード）そしてCharle s Moose Allicy（ドラム）がバンドを結成した2006年11月 、彼等はある重大な決断をする。それは、彼 等の運命共同体的価値とメンバーが持つ”DIY 精神”を基礎に、バンドのキャリアにおける あらゆる側面を運営することだった。バンド の人権問題への真摯な取り組みと、バンドの 司令塔Alex Fosterがアムネスティ・インターナショナルの 熱心なスポークスパーソンとして、また若者 の情熱的な代弁者として活動していたのは周 知の事実。これにより、バンドはすでに広く 知られ、荒削りだが洗練されたメロディ感覚 と内省的かつ力強い歌詞を巧みにブレンドし たYFEサウンドは、瞬く間に世界中の熱狂的音 楽ファンを虜にした。そして、彼らファンは 、バンドへの情熱を傾け、有機的かつ自然発 生的に、驚くべき数のstreet team、コミュニティー、ファンサイトそして ォーラムをこの地球上の全ての主要都市で 現させている。 その結果、こうした驚異的サポートに触発さ れ、また、この唯一無二のYFEサウンドを切望 する驚くほど大量のリクエストが殺到したた め、彼等6人は、 2007年4月、自主レーベルHopeful Tragedy Recordsの設立を決意。同年6月1日、Your Favorite Enemies初となるEP” And If I Was To Die In the Morning… Would I Still Be Sleeping With You”(セルフプロデュース5曲+EPのみ収録のボ ナストラック1曲)を同レーベルより全世界 料込みでたった10ドルという価格でリリース 。しかし、当時のバンドのアドバイザーらは 、それを無謀なやり方と決めつけ成功を疑問 視。結果、彼らの強行な反対に遭い、バンド は必要なサポートを得られないという事態に 直面した。それでも彼らは、忠実なファン達 を第一にするという確固たるヴィジョンを保 ち続け、モントリオールから東京に至る、世 界中の彼らの EPを待望するファンのために、無謀とも言え 低価格かつ世界均一価格でのEPリリースの 現化に踏み切った。 多くの人々が歴史的大失敗とバンドのキャリ アにおける大失態を予想していたが、インデ ィーレーベルを設立し、ファンの気持ちに応 えるべくレーベルのオンライン・ストアのみ でEPを販売するという決断は、結果としてYour Favorite Enemiesの決定的な分岐点となり、バンドは様 な活動を行い2007年を終えた。仏”ROCK ONE”誌をはじめとする数々の国際メディアに インディーバンドとしては異例の扱いで取り 上げられ、夏には東京でのmeet and greetを開催、秋にはバンド初となるヨーロッ 単独プロモーション・ツアーを敢行、2007年 末にはEPの売り上げは3万枚を記録。加えてマ ルチメディア部門をHopeful Tragedy Records内に設立。ウェブ上で斬新な企画を進 、毎週更新のポッドキャスト配信番組「YFE-T V」を制作し好評を博している。こうした様 な取り組みにより、YFEは、非従来型音楽モ ルから続々と登場している新たな「DIY」バ ド達の中でも最もエキサイティングなバン の一つとして頭角を現しつつある。 言うまでもなく、彼らを待ち構える未来を占 う上で2007年が好調の前触れであったとする ら、2008年は、このモントリオール出身の6人 のミュージシャンにとって間違いなく面白く なるはずだ。ちなみに彼らは、すでにBillboard Magazineが選ぶ2008年要注目バンド・トップ5の とつとして紹介されているほどである。そ て現在、今春リリース予定の待望のニュー ルバム制作に没頭。彼等のバンドとしての ィジョンに基づいて、アルバムはHopeful Tragedy Recordsよりリリース予定。ファンの期待を裏 らぬようその準備に余念がない。 |
