Since he was very young, Patrick Ruffino has been exposed to all styles of music from the greatest of jazz, funk reggae, salsa, R&B, soul gospel, etc. to traditional African music. His father is a Mina-Nago from Benin, his mother is from Burkina Faso and his grandmother is Ghanaian. All of these people contributed to the development of Patrick’s tastes and pronounced curiosity for music as well as his strong musical ear.He started playing bass at age 10, but his curiosity pushed him equally toward traditional African singing and dancing, and other influences evident in his concerts; guitar; percussion; and piano, before returning to the bass which became his favorite instrument. However, he has never abandoned these other instruments and has taken up also the acoustic bass. Playing and singing regularly in school concerts and in choirs, he decided, very early to become a professional musician. Self-taught, he studied jazz as well as other types of music and refined his skills in contacts with other musicians. These meetings become indispensable for Patrick: sharing, exchanging, learning by contact with others is vital for him.His sensibility makes him a poet and pushes him to react, in his poems, to certain revolting realities of our world today such as injustice, violence, lack of respect peoples’ respect for others, trafficking and mistreatment of children, etc.It is this anger and pain that he expresses often in his songs. He writes in different languages (Fon, Mina, Dendi, Toruba, French, English). His technique, sense of rhythm, his groove, the ease with which he adapts to all rhythms, and he ability to memorize arrangements rapidly makes him an artist solicited by numerous jazz and other groups not only in Africa but in Europe and the US. Thus, since many years it has played all styles of music onstage and in the studio, with many different artists of diverse origins. He has played in Paris clubs since 2002, where he has dedicated a large part of his career. In these performances he has always looked for other talented young artists and invited them to perform with him. The latest results are Safari (2002), Cadjêhoun (2004) and Sahel (2002) that have appeared in concert. He was also instrumental in founding the big band Gombo with almost thirty artists from West Africa. As singer, bassist, composer, arranger and interpreter he founded in 1997 the group Fâ whose album Défi (Challenge) received two awards in Benin in 2001. He was one of three finalists in the Radio France International Discovery 2006 world music competition at which he sang in several languages music from his new album E wa ka jo. His music is a cocktail of old and new African rhythms. He has composed music for several African and European films, documentaries and plays. He just contributed his voice to the film Changing Faces, a film by Nigerian director Issiaka Lasaku and Norwegian composer Marin Romberg. Patrick RUFFINO a, dès sa plus tendre enfance, été exposé à tous les styles de musiques – des plus grands classiques de (jazz, funk, reggae, salsa, r&b, soul, gospel etc) aux musiques traditionnelles africaines. Son père est Mina-Nago du Bénin, sa mère est du Burkina Faso, et sa grand-mère est du Ghana. Tous ont contribué à développer chez Patrick un goût et une curiosité prononcés pour la musique ainsi qu’une oreille musicale avertie. Il commence à jouer de la basse à l’âge de 10 ans, mais sa curiosité le pousse également vers la chanson et la danse (chants et chorégraphies traditionnels d’Afrique et d’ailleurs, des influences encore perceptibles aujourd’hui lors de ses concerts), la guitare, les percussions et le piano, avant de revenir à la basse qui devient son instrument de prédilection. Il n’abandonne cependant jamais les autres instruments et s’essaie même à la contrebasse. Jouant et chantant régulièrement dans des concerts scolaires et des chorales, il décide, très tôt, de devenir musicien professionnel. Autodidacte, il étudie le jazz ainsi que d’autres types de musiques et se perfectionne au contact d’autres artistes. Ces rencontres s’avèrent indispensables pour Patrick : partager, échanger, apprendre au contact des autres est vital pour lui. Sa sensibilité fait de lui un poète et le pousse à réagir, dans ses textes, à certaines réalités révoltantes de notre monde telles que l’injustice, la violence, l’irrespect de l’Homme envers son prochain ou le trafic des enfants. C’est cette colère et cette douleur qu’il exprime souvent au travers de ses chansons. Il écrit ses textes dans différentes langues (fon, mina, dendi, yoruba, français et en anglais). Sa technique, son sens du rythme, son groove, la facilité avec laquelle il s’adapte à tous les rythmes et sa capacité à mémoriser rapidement des arrangements en font un artiste sollicité par de nombreux groupes de jazz et d’autres musiques, non seulement en Afrique, mais aussi en Europe et aux Etats-Unis. Ainsi, depuis plusieurs années, il joue tous les styles de musique, sur scène et en studio, avec beaucoup d’artistes d’origines diverses. Il est un habitué des clubs de jazz parisiens, cependant depuis 2005, il se consacre à sa propre carrière. Pendant ses tournées, il cherche toujours à découvrir d’autres jeunes artistes talentueux, et les invite pour ses créations. Les derniers résultats de cette démarche sont « Safari » (2002). « Cadjêhoun » (2004) et « Sahel » (2005) qui ont débouché sur des concerts. Il en est de même pour son initiative concernant le Big Band « Gombo » avec près d’une trentaine d’artistes de l’Afrique de l’Ouest. Chanteur, bassiste, Compositeur, arrangeur et interprète, il a fondé, en 1997, le groupe « Fâ » dont l’Album « Défi » a obtenu, en 2001, deux Awards au Bénin. Il fait partie des 3 finalistes du Concours « Découverte RFI – 2006 » musiques du monde avec son nouvel album « E wa ka jo » sur lequel il chante dans plusieurs langues. Son --uvre est un cocktail de rythmes africains de l’ancienne et de la nouvelle génération. Il a composé de nombreuses musiques de films, documentaires et de pièces théâtre africain et européen.
