Subscribe Free Add to my Page Traditional ska is a form of Jamaican music that combines elements of mento and calypso with an American jazz and rhythm and blues sound. Originating in Jamaica, in the 1950s, it was a precursor to rocksteady and later reggae. The history of ska is best divided into three waves. There was revival of note in England in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and the third wave of popularity started in the 1990s, mostly based in the United States. In it's current incarnation, ska is found throughout the world and has been fused with many other styles including punk, celtic, dancehall reggae, rock, emo, hardcore, polka, zydeco, and believe it or not, even country (yuck!). Mainstream bands such as Sublime, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, No Doubt, and Reel Big Fish have brought the style into the spotlight however the heart and soul of ska is in the underground ska scene and the diverse bands that lurk within it's realm. There is no other music like ska and there's nothing like ska culture. Be sure to check out Ska's Squidoo website... Ska's Website |
