Marital Status: Married to Connie Children: Sebastian and Paulina Career Highlights 1999 CART Champion 2000 Indianapolis 500 Winner 2003 Monaco Grand Prix Winner Youngest CART Champion in Series History NEXTEL Cup Debut at HMS in 2006 It is hard to imagine Juan Pablo Montoya the rookie, but that is exactly what the internationally-known racer will be when he enters the 2007 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup season teaming up with Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates (CGRFS). Montoya will become the first Formula One regular to join the NASCAR ranks on a full-time basis when he pilots the No. 42 Texaco/Havoline Dodge in the season-opening Daytona 500. The CGRFS teams put together a rigorous testing and racing schedule for Montoya in 2006 after announcing his signing in July. He competed in seven stock car events across three different series - ARCA RE/MAX Series, NASCAR Busch Series and NEXTEL Cup Series. He turned heads in his stock car debut at Talladega Superspeedway in October, qualifying on the front row and leading the first nine laps en route to a third-place finish in the ARCA RE/MAX Series race. Montoya competed in the ARCA season finale at Iowa Speedway, his first short-track race, where he qualified third and finished 24th. He made his NASCAR debut in the Busch Series event at Memphis Motorsports Park just two weeks later. The team decided Montoya would compete in the final three races on the Busch Series schedule and make his much anticipated NEXTEL Cup debut at Homestead-Miami Speedway. He finished 28th at Texas Motor Speedway and earned his third top-20 finish at Phoenix in just his fifth stock car start. Homestead-Miami would mark the end of the 2006 transition period for Montoya as he competed in both the Busch and NEXTEL Cup races. He parlayed a 31st-place qualifying run into a 14th-place finish on Saturday before making his Cup debut on Sunday. He qualified 29th among the 55 cars entered for the NEXTEL Cup race. Montoya drove the No. 30 Texaco/Havoline Dodge up as high as 13th before getting tapped from behind and sent into the outside wall on lap 252 of the 268-lap race. It???s been six years since the 31-year-old Montoya has driven for team owner Chip Ganassi. The young Colombian found himself heading to the United States in 1999 as part of a driver swap between the Williams Formula One team, where Montoya was a test driver, and Ganassi. The team owner exchange resulted in Montoya taking over for two-time CART Champion Alex Zanardi at Ganassi???s Indianapolis-based open-wheel shop. Immediately, Montoya made his presence known in the CART Series, and all across the United States. At the age of 24, the rookie driver proceeded to set several series records en route to claiming his first and Ganassi???s fourth-consecutive CART Championship. Montoya claimed a record breaking seven wins in his rookie season, including the most consecutive wins by a rookie (three) and the most laps led by a rookie (954). Altogether, he collected more wins, pole positions, laps led and earnings than any other driver during the 1999 CART season. As the defending series champion, Montoya added three additional wins to his CART resume in 2000 while battling for the points lead until the second to last race of the season. He finished ninth, just 42 points behind the eventual champion. In addition to the regular CART season, Ganassi decided to enter his teams in the Indy Racing League???s Indianapolis 500 for the first time since 1995. The 2000 Indianapolis 500, one of the most prestigious races in the world, was Montoya???s first trip to the famed Brickyard. After just missing the pole and starting second on the grid, Montoya set a rookie record by leading 167 out of 200 laps on his way to an Indy 500 victory. That same weekend, Williams announced Montoya had signed a two-year deal to drive for them in the Formula One Series. Montoya spent from 2001 to 2006 in F1, and continued to amass impressive open-wheel statistics. He has made 137 starts between the CART, IndyCar and the Formula One Series??? where he???s tallied 18 wins, 26 poles, 60 top-five and 79 top-10 finishes. Over his five complete seasons in Formula One, Montoya finished sixth or better in the standings every year. Only time will tell how Montoya will fare in America???s premiere motorsports division, but based on his past successes it shouldn't be long before Montoya is running up front.
