She can act. She can dance. She can sing. She looks great and she oozes a unique star quality. In the past two years she has starred in the musical Chicago in London’s West End, won a prime-time TV reality show, released a Top Ten single, been voted Maxim magazine’s Cover Girl of the Year, won a feature role in the film version of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera and starred in the top-rated ITV court-room drama The Brief. She is currently in talks about taking her Chicago role to Broadway plus a new West End theatre role, and is wanted for four international films, one to be shot in North America. It’s hard to believe that such a multi-talented, polished and seasoned performer as Jennifer is just 22 years of age.To understand the phenomenon that is Jennifer Ellison, you must go to her childhood, when the pretty six-year-old perched herself on the counter of a shop in her home city of Liverpool – birthplace of The Beatles - and declared her plans for world showbiz domination. "Hello!" she bellowed, "My name`s Jennifer Ellison and one day I`m going to be famous!" She was right. Throughout her childhood, Jennifer was dedicated to the arts and sang in many concerts. But her real love was dance and she became a classically-trained ballet dancer. In her teens she secured a coveted place at the Royal Ballet School but by then her career had catapulted her in a different direction – television – and ballet was put on hold. Jennifer first wrote to the producers of the immensely-popular Channel 4 soap Brookside when she was nine, asking for an audition. Her mother still keeps the polite rejection letter in a frame on the living room wall. She knew it was only a matter of time before Jennifer would be a star. At 14, Jennifer took the leading role of Emily Shadwick in the soap and Emily`s loves, losses, heartbreaks and mischiefs captivated the nation. Jennifer’s first Brookside contract was for six episodes but she was such a hit with viewers that she stayed in the show for five years. When Jennifer Ellison was on Brookside, the TV company’s press office had two piles in their in-tray: Brookside fan mail and Jennifer Ellison fan mail. But her first loves of singing and dancing were calling her. "I came out of the womb born to act, sing and dance,” says Jennifer. “I have to follow my heart.” Jennifer`s debut single, released on June 16, 2003, was a cover of Transvision Vamp`s 1989 pop rock classic `Baby I Don`t Care`. A year later, on July 26, 2004, a second single came out, and “Bye Bye Boy” reached the UK Top Ten. Jennifer’s bubbling personality made her a natural choice to be one of the celebrity contestants last year in ITV’s hit reality TV series, Hell’s Kitchen. Viewers voted her the winner, and masterchef chef Gordon Ramsey, who hosted the series, said of her: "I have never seen a girl of 21 be so determined to absorb the discipline of the kitchen." That sums up Jennifer’s dedication to succeed. Nowhere has this been seen to greater effect than in Jennifer’s West End stage debut in the demanding role of Roxie Hart in the award-winning musical Chicago at the Adelphi Theatre. Audiences were wowed by the energy Jennifer gave off with each live performance - and she played to packed houses. It was the perfect showcase for her singing, acting and dancing abilities. Her auburn wig and her remarkable American accent convinced many theatre-goers that a U.S.-born actress had taken over the role. But it really was Jennifer – eight performances a week for three gruelling months. Christmas 2004 saw her first film role in Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera. She played the ballerina Meg Giry alongside an international cast including Minnie Driver and Gerard Butler, directed by the highly-respected Joel Schumacher. The part was rewritten from the original script to give Jennifer more time on screen and she played a major role in this wonderful production. Her dancing and singing talents were showcased and once again, her distinctive natural Liverpool accent was easily cast aside to be replaced by a cut-glass accent of which the Queen would be proud. Her acting skills came to the fore in the ITV court-room drama The Brief, in which she undertook the demanding role of a young nurse accused of murdering a patient. The harrowing scenes in which she was cross-examined in court before breaking down and confessing received wide acclaim from viewers and in Press reviews. Jennifer’s philosophy is simple: You can get what you want out of life if you really believe in yourself and work hard. No one can doubt her self-belief nor her outstanding talent and commitment. And in those immortal showbiz words: You ain’t seen nothing yet. | |
