Had to add this one. This was a local Austin band and their brush with fame. Boyz In The Hood!!------------------------------------------------------ ------This is from Conan O'Brien back in '95. I totally lucked out and got to see the rehearsal for this during soundcheck at the '95 Austin show. Too cool.Teenage Fanclub, one of my favorite bands. Music:My music tastes are pretty varied. I grew up listening to the Beatles, the Stones, the Doors, Beethoven, Bach and Mozart. That started in the crib. Any of those things and others could have been stacked together on the record player. In high school, I expanded into prog rock, metal and punk. Odd combination for sure, but it kept things interesting. I was never really into what was really popular with everybody else. I still like to listen to both prog and punk, even they are very much opposite styles. I have also gotten into early 70's funk and soul, thanks to an old college friend. Most recently, I have been on a three year bender with power pop. Favorite bands are kind of tough for me, really depends on my mood. I am really big on the Beatles, King Crimson, The O'Jays, The Isley Brothers, James Brown, Rush, Teenage Fanclub, Sloan, Marillion, The New Year, XTC, the Clash, The Buzzcocks, Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield and The Police...................................................... ............................................................ ....................It should come as no surprise to anybody that knows me, that I ended up playing Rock & roll. Starting in High School, before I could actually play anything, I was already well immersed in sounds and music. I would borrow any instrument I could get my hands on, just to mess around with it. I would also try out as vocalist for whatever band would let me audition. None of those tryouts ever came to anything, but the experiences helped me out and kept me going. After two years learning how to live in South Dakota, I moved back to Iowa and bought a VERY used bass from a high school classmate (Doug MacAlpine). I have been playing ever since, over 20 years now. I still have that bass, an early 70's Gibson Grabber, but I don't think that Doug would recognize it now. It's had a couple of facelifts, mainly I turned it into a fretless bass ten years ago and gave it a (now very dated) paint job 20 years ago. I have come a long way from those modest beginings on the bass. I have played around with 6 string and fretless bass and settled into playing 5 string fretted and fretless basses a couple of years ago. I have also worked on the Chapman Stick with limited success. Perhaps sometime I'll be able to put more time in to that instrument. |
