About Me |
|
| Mr. Clement "Sir Coxsone" Seymour Dodd, O.D. was born on January 26, 1932 in the parish of Kingston, Jamaica. He attended the All Saints School where he was given the nickname "Coxsone" because of his skills as an all-round cricketer, after the all round cricketer who played for the Yorkshire cricket team of the 1940's. Sir Coxsone Dodd is widely considered to be the founding father of Jamaica's popular music. He is credited with its global success and the worldwide respect it enjoys, after being nurtured by the fatherly hands of the visionary producer Clement Dodd since the early 1950's when he began as a sound system owner. The role of "Sir Coxsone's Downbeat" sound system was fundamental to the development of Jamaica's music of the early era. Mr. Dodd invested his time, resources and his considerable musical ear and knowledge in pursuing his dream of creating an original music and expressing the creativity of his people. Virtually every Jamaican artist of note received their start at Studio One which came to be known around the world as the University of Jamaican Music under the guidance of Mr. Dodd who was both producer and father to many of his artist and musicians. His musical legacy includes the birth of many of Jamaica's most prolific artist including the Skatalites. Soul Vendors , Soul Brothers, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Ken Boothe , Delroy Wilson , Dennis brown , Jackie Mittoo , Don Drummond , Monty Alexander , Ernie Ranglin , The Paragons , Alton Ellis , Burning Spear , Marcia Griffiths , Jackie Opel , Toots & The Maytals , Heptones , Bob Andy , Clarendonians , Jackie Edwards and many more. The Numerous awards he received during his lifetime pale in comparison to his musical achievements and history will recall his contribution to the world's culture as recognized through the Studio One Catalogue. Clement Dodd was a humble Jamaican pioneer who carried himself and his people with dignity.
