About Me

After growing up, doing a lot of writing and work, I moved on to the battlefield of World War I. However, my military career ended when I was wounded in Italy in 1918 when delivering chocolates, cigarettes, and letters to soldiers.
My wives include: Elizabeth Hadley Richardson (1921 - 1927), Pauline Pfeiffer (1927 - ?), Martha Ellis Gellhorn (1940 - 1944), Mary Welsh Monks (1946 - 1961)
I wrote many books, novels, poems, and such throughout the years. My adventures include going to Spain to support the Spanish Civil War loyalists, often travelling around, and living with my final wife in Cuba. I also was awarded the 1953 Pulitzer Prize for The Old Man and the Sea (1952), and subsequently received the 1954 Nobel Prize for Literature."The most essential gift for a good writer is a built-in, shock-proof shit detector. This is the writer's radar and all great writers have it." - Interview in the Paris Review
