This profile was edited with MySpaceGrill Editor Petra Richterova was born in Prague, Czech Republic (1978). She moved to New York City in 1996 to study photography with Frank Stewart and attend a liberal arts program at the City University of New York. Before receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree (2002), Ms. Richterova was granted numerous fellowships in support of ongoing projects in West Africa. Under the tutelage of Prof. Robert Farris Thompson, she then received her Master of Arts and Master of Philosophy degrees from Yale University, specializing in African and Afro-American art (History of Art Department, 2005 and 2008). As a photographer, Richterova has worked with Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Cuban rumba ensemble Yoruba Andabo, the NY-based band Living Colour and Black Light Productions, among others. She has shown at Columbia University in the exhibit "Making Music with Light: Jazz and the Art of Photography" as well as Museum of Art and Origins exhibitions entitled "Sacred Bond: Mothers, Fathers and Legendary Ancestors" and "Delta to Delta: From the Niger to the Mississippi." She is on the board of directors of the Museum of Art and Origins (NYC and Ghana) and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in the history of art at Yale University. Her dissertation on AfroCuban expressive culture is tentatively entitled "Tu Tumbao: Iconography of the Rumba Complex." Petra lives in Brooklyn, New York.
