| Almost too eccentric to be believable, Julien Jacob (born in Benin, raised in France) is one of those uncategorisable fringe figures who occasionally slip through to enormous commercial success. Part-murmuring chansonier, part-ritual declaimer, part-Laurie Anderson-style sound poet, he writes and sings entirely in a sonorously alliterative language of his own devising - intoning, crooning and wheezing his songs over suggestively abstract soundscapes. And if that all sounds too self-consciously odd for its own good, the results are surprisingly tuneful, even catchy. Layering his earthily seductive voice with touches of avant-rock, folk and Arab music, Jacob has an apparently instinctive feel for the structures of pop. He could be huge. TELEGRAPH Julien Jacob est un chanteur, compositeur et instrumentiste extraordinaire, au sens propre du terme. Un extraterrestre, auteur d'un deuxième album inclassable, qui dès les premières notes interpelle par sa singularité. Né au Bénin, de parents antillais, Julien Jacob grandit en France et finit par élire domicile en Bretagne. Contre toute attente, sa musique n'a rien à voir avec lesdites « musiques du monde » , ou même avec la chanson française. Certes, des accents pop et afro, des tonalités orientales et hindoues viennent s'entremêler pour créer des atmosphères acoustiques d'une douceur infinie. Sur cette mosaïque de sons réinventés, Julien Jacob pose une voix paisible, gorgée de sensualité, qui tantôt murmure, tantôt s'élève avec assurance. Jusque-là, rien de bien étonnant, si ce n'est qu'une force envoûtante semble imprégner chaque mélodie. Et si la curiosité vous pousse à ouvrir le livret accompagnant l'album pour explorer de plus près ces textes étranges, ne cherchez pas, ils ne correspondent à aucun dialecte existant. Persuadé que la signification des mots entrave la force de la musique, Julien Jacob crée de toutes pièces une langue dont lui seul connaît les codes. Ses textes, proches de l'incantation, n'ont de sens que par l'émotion qu'ils suscitent, par leurs sonorités, leurs vibrations.
