Sidewaytown is a dreamy-weird shoegaze/post rock hybrid formed in 2006 by Markus Baltes (ex-Autumnblaze). 2007 saw the release of the 1st album "Years in the wall", a 10 song record with a breathtaking story concept & music to the film in your head. "When an oppressed soul seeks salvation and the hungry mind restlessly reaches for the new, then it’s time to narrow the present, separating the past from the future… Singer and songwriter Markus Baltes faces a one year lasting quest, reaching a level of a new awareness that gives him peace to let his almost 10 years spanning career in Autumblaze off into the shadows of oblivion. Passing borders and finding his own destination in 2006, he arrives in SIDEWAYTOWN, sheltering new creative expressions, ultimately a place to reinvent himself. Though, reminiscences of the past still hold their ground. The debut record Years In The Wall is the first part of a conceptual story of disillusion and delusion, hope and love, longing and death, a world where words destroy life. Here one can sense out an always present influence of the grandmaster of twisted and bizarre worlds: David Lynch. This lyrical journey through this surreal world SIDEWAYTOWN supports with a wide range of soundcapes (with the collaboration of Markus Stock on drums and Fabian Strauß on bass), where the ethereal beauty of Shoegaze – most known from bands such as Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine – merges with earthy and edgy guitars of the Post Rock genre. Warm guitar melodies embrace and welcome you, gently caress soul and senses or unload in emotional eruptions. SIDEWAYTOWN is a trip between the worlds. Gruffy guitar work gives no chance to sentimental Pop appeal and shoegazingly spread serenity and dreaminess immerses into the surreal, melancholically dark story behind. In between well-known elements shine through with early TripHop influences, added by some heavier leanings from Anathema to Katatonia. With his clean singing Markus Baltes perfectly covers the spectrum he needs for his performance, with no need for additional male or female counterparts. Years In The Wall is an excellent musical realization of an unusual story, a pure pleasure of listening, hauntingly beautiful, full of emotions and sophisticated turns in music.
