| Photography has been my tool for exploring the human condition. For all that makes each individual unique, there is a familiarity that we see in each other. From a young age I was fascinated by the ability of the camera to capture the moments. But photography is so much more then just capturing a moment. Although I never ignore the framing and technical aspects, I push myself to slow down and look at the obvious. As a photographer, I see that I have two major roles. One is to engage my subject in a way that causes the “mask” people often put on for the camera to drop and show a true essence of the individual. The other is to meticulously frame my images in a way that draws the eye throughout the image. My education and professional experience have led me into various styles of photography including fashion, music and weddings. However, environmental portraiture and documentary photography drive me to dig for the deeper meaning. The way subjects interact with their environment fascinates me and I find that subjects become more open when they are in an environment that is comfortable to them. Since humanity has been my driving inspiration to photograph, I find that human presence even sneaks into my scenic images. Whether it’s a road or a sign, the effects people have left on the environment or the absence of human effect, my images pry into that curious question of the human existence. |
