About Me

I was born in Glasgow and have lived South of the Border since 1988, firstly in Manchester and then in and around Cambridge. Spent 20 years working in hospitals and community settings doing my bit to improve health services and then gave it all up to join Salt Publishing to work with Chris and the wider Salt team to help turn it into something fantastic. I am married to poet Chris Emery and have 3 children who I hope will make their mark on the world.

Take the following with a pinch of salt (I just couldn't resist that, sorry) - just a bit of fun - have a go yourself.

You Are An ENTP
The Visionary

You are charming, outgoing, friendly. You make a good first impression.
You possess good negotiating skills and can convince anyone of anything.
Happy to be the center of attention, you love to tell stories and show off.
You're very clever, but not disciplined enough to do well in structured environments.

In love, you see everything as a grand adventure. You enjoy taking risks for love.
And if things don't work out, you're usually not too much worse for the wear!

You would make a great entrepreneur, marketing executive, or actor.

At work, you need a lot of freedom to pursue your own path and vision.
How you see yourself: Analytical, creative, and peaceful

When other people don't get you, they see you as: Detached, wishy-washy, and superficial What's Your Personality Type?'Breathes the best feat. Short Stories' by Virgilio

My Interests

I am a great one for starting projects (but not necessarily finishing them) and getting enthusiastic about new ventures (even if only short lived). At the moment this includes running, which I've recently discovered I can do and love it.Food us up there on my list of passions - I like cooking, though it's not always appreciated by the family. Walking the dog keeps me sane, I paint the house every summer when I always have lots of energy. Oh, yes, and books - I love them - and reading! Just as well, really, given my job is to read manuscripts and publish books.CURRENT MOON lunar phaseOops, nearly forgot, I am Swingball Champ, undefeated.

I'd like to meet:

People who can recommend short story authors. People who run. People passionate about food. Paul Auster and JG Ballard, John Travolta 20 years ago.
adopt your own virtual pet!

Music:

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah are the best. I like all sorts of other music: David Bowie. The Band. Velvet Underground. The Pixies, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Andy Stewart (after a few drinks), Johnny Cash, Arcade Fire, The Killers, just about everything, up to a point.

Movies:

I love films and go to the cinema every Saturday morning with my daughter so am well up on children's movies. Rent lots of DVDs and have wide-ranging taste. Can watch the same ones time and time again as I have a terrible memory and forget plots and endings very quickly. 21 Grams was fab. Calamity Jane. Fight Club. The Matrix (first one only - a classic). Grease, Kill Bill 1 & 2 - I want to come back as Uma Thurman in that film in the next life.

Television:

Can't be bothered with it. Endure lots of children's tv channels, usually at full volume.

Books:

I love all of Salt Publishing's authors - we publish the most exciting poets and short story writers in the world (seriously, we do).
Click here for Myspace LayoutsMore generally, I love short stories, especially by North American authors. Loved Cloud Atlas (lots of interconnected short stories) and was with Pi every nautical mile of his journey with the tiger. Loved Brass by Helen Walsh - a bare-knuckle read. JG Ballard's Vermilion Sands is a masterpiece. Like to read books recommended by interesting people - as long as they're short [received this comment in response to that statement: Now, really, how many short people do you know who are really interesting deep down, once you get over the "Hi" and "Gosh, you're short... was your Dad short too?"]Paul Auster - just about everything by him. Anna Kavan.

One day to go!

I can hardly believe it, but I've been counting down the days, double checked them and tomorrow, definitely, the children go back to school. We have all survived 6 weeks together: adults, children and...

Books, Books and more Books

Feeling very bookish today - something to do with it being warm and I've just had an enormous lovely cooked breakfast; a sure fire way of focussing my mind on life's finer things. I thought I'd do a q...

A Little Forward Planning

Just back from my usual Saturday morning jaunt to the cinema with children. This week we saw Meet the Robinsons, which was fine. I would give it 6.5 out of 10. I've seen much worse (nothing could ever...

Best Laid Plans etc

Not long back in from my week 1, session 2 run. I must have put on weight since Monday as I swear I could feel the lard in my (what must be) fat arse jiggling up and down. It was rather uncomfortable,...

Village Life in a Pickle

Countdown already

I've not been looking forward to this day for at least two weeks. You see, it is now exactly 6 weeks until I run in a 10km run and all the time I was on holiday I ran not a single step. And I over ate...
