About Me

..

Click the banner below for the official BRICKMAN website.

I have been a professional freelance comic artist & writer since 1984. During that time I have worked for many publishers such as IPC, Marvel Comics, Egmont, Panini, and D.C. Thomson, covering the comics field from originated characters to licensed properties.

I've produced strips for numerous publications including VIZ; BEANO SUMMER SPECIAL; BUSTER; OINK!; FUN-SIZE DANDY; FUN-SIZE BEANO; SONIC THE COMIC; WHITE DWARF; GHOSTBUSTERS; TRANSFORMERS, and national newspapers DAILY STAR and SUNDAY SPORT. I've also written articles on the history of comics for publications such as 2000 AD,THE COMICS JOURNAL, and the BBC website.

Over the years, my characters have enjoyed long and popular runs, such as ten years for "Tom Thug" in BUSTER and four years for "Combat Colin" in Marvel's TRANSFORMERS comic. I was also a regular writer on SONIC THE COMIC for seven years.

The past two decades have seen major changes to the UK comics market, but I have always adapted to maintain regular work in the industry. Having worked for publications for all age groups, my work has appeared in such diverse titles as CiTV TELLYTOTS and LEGO ADVENTURES for the nursery market, to VIZ and SWEET FA for the adult reader.

In recent years I have expanded my work overseas as well as the UK. In 2003 I had an album of my work published in Norway: FORSTADSSATANISTENE (Suburban Satanists) and 2005 saw the publication of my book BRICKMAN BEGINS for the Los Angeles based publisher Active Images.

Current regular assignments include "Team Toxic" for TOXIC (Egmont Magazines,UK), "Suicidal Syd", "The Pathetic Sharks" and "Felix and His Amazing Underpants" for Viz, a brand new series for The Beano, and "Brickman" for ELEPHANTMEN (Image Comics, USA).

My Interests

Movies:

Early black and white horror/monster movies: Frankenstein, King Kong, Invisible Man etc, plus Marx Brothers, Citizen Kane, Metropolis, Laurel & Hardy 2 reelers, early Flash Gordon serials, ...waste of time me having a colour telly really innit?

Slightly more contemporary stuff: Donnie Darko, 2001, The Wicker Man, Planet of the Apes (the original version), The Time Machine (again, the original version), LA Confidential, Back to the Future, sixties James Bond, Batman (1966) to name a few. I can't stand Star Wars though 'cos if you're going to put robots in a film make them kick ass types not fey wimps like C3PO. And don't get me started on those bloody Ewoks, or that muppet who annoyingly he spoke. The bits with Carrie Fisher in a bikini were worth watching though.

Television:

Doctor Who, Life on Mars, Peep Show (when I remember it's on), bits and bobs. I tend to buy DVDs of shows I like so I can watch them when I want, such as CSI, Babylon 5, Alias, Xena, original Twilight Zone, Seinfeld, The Prisoner, UFO, Lost in Space, Timeslip, The Saint, Danger Man etc. Selected cult tv but I'm definitely not interested in Stargate or Battlestar Galactica although I keep hearing how good Galactica is. I only saw one bit and the shaky hand held camera work got on my nerves. Convince me I'm wrong and I'll buy you an ice cream.

Heroes:

As far as comics creators are concerned: Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Mike Higgs, Leo Baxendale, Ken Reid, Mike Noble... to name but a few whose work first attracted me to comics and therefore set the course of my life.
