| William Villaverde is originally from Havana, Cuba and is a nationalized U.S. Citizen. He began his career as a pianist in his native country, where he was one of the youngest recitalists to be a member of the National Center of Concert Music and a member of the Piano Faculty of the National School of Music. Some of his live recordings have been broadcasted by the Cuban National Radio and he also performed on National Television.Villaverde has performed extensively throughout Cuba, Bolivia, Spain, and the United States. As a soloist, he has performed with the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra, with the College of Charleston Symphony Orchestra, the Meadows Symphony Orchestra, the Iuventas Symphony Orchestra (Spain) and the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Valencia . His international appearances include the Havana International Contemporary Music Festival, the Iberoamerican International Music Festival of Havana, the COFES International Music Festival in Bolivia, the Piccolo Spoleto International Music Festival in Charleston, South Carolina, and the International Piano Series at the College of Charleston, among others. The Charleston City Paper has described Villaverde's performances as "unforgettable". The music critic of the newspaper of Leon, Spain, described Villaverde as a marvelous pianist, who gave one of the best versions he had heard of Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 1.Villaverde won First Prize in the 2005 Annual Meadows Concerto Competition at Southern Methodist University (Dallas, TX). The Meadows School of the Arts at SMU awarded him with the 2005 Von Mickwitz Prize in Piano. The College of Charleston awarded him with the 2003 and 2004 Edwin Davis Peacock Awards for the excellence of his piano performances. Villaverde was also the State and the Southern Division Winner at the 2003 MTNA (Music Teachers National Association) Piano Competition. In 2002 he won First Prize in the Southeastern Piano Competition (North Carolina) and the 2002 Arthur Fraser Piano Competition (Columbia, South Carolina), where he also won the Audience Choice Award. While in Cuba, he won Second Prize in the 1999 Piano Competition of the National Union of Cuban Writers and Artists. He was also honored as "Laureate for Art" by the Higher Institute of Arts.Villaverde studied in Havana at the National School of Music and at the Higher Institute of Arts with pianist and composer, Andres Alen. He later came to the United States under a Full Piano Scholarship to study at the College of Charleston in South Carolina with pianist Enrique Graf. After graduating Cum Laude from the College of Charleston, Villaverde entered the class of pianist Joaquin Achucarro under a Full Piano Scholarship at the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. He has also been coached by pianists Jorge Luis Prats, Ilana Vered, Alessio Bax, Alfred Mouledous, and Leonel Morales. Villaverde holds both a Masters of Music and Artist Certificate degree in Piano Performance from SMU. Currently, Villaverde is pursuing his Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance with American pianist and composer Dr. JB Floyd under a full scholarship at the University of Miami. In addition to his studies he is also teaching there as graduate assistant.************************************************** ***********William Villaverde nacio en La Habana, Cuba y es nacionalizado estadounidense. Empezo su carrera como pianista en su pais de origen, donde desde muy joven era concertista miembro del Centro Nacional de Musica de Concierto, profesor de piano en la Escuela Nacional de Musica, tambien grabo para la Television Nacional y la Radio Nacional de Cuba. Villaverde ha tocado en Cuba, Bolivia, Espana y Estados Unidos, y ha participado en festivales internacionales tales como el Festival Internacional de Musica Contemporanea ( La Habana, Cuba), II Encuentro Iberoamericano de Piano(Cuba), el Festival COFES (Cochabamba, Bolivia), el Festival Internacional Piccolo Spoleto ( Charleston, USA), y la Serie Internacional de Piano del College of Charleston, entre muchos otros. Como solista, Villaverde ha tocado con la South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra , con la Orquesta Sinfonica del College of Charleston, con la Meadows Symphony Orchestra, con la Orquesta Sinfonica Iuventas de Madrid y la Joven Orquesta Sinfonica de Valencia. Sus interpretaciones han sido calificadas de "inolvidables" por el periodico "Charleston City Paper" en Carolina del Sur ( USA) y el critico del "Diario de Leon" en Espana califico la version del 1er Concierto de Liszt por Villaverde como como una de las mejores que podia recordar. Villaverde ha sido ganador del primer premio en el 2002 Southeastern Piano Competition, en Carolina del Norte y en el 2002 Arthur Fraser Piano Competition en Columbia, Carolina del Sur, donde también ganó el premio adicional de la audiencia. Fue también ganador del estado de Carolina del Sur y de la region del Sureste en el concurso MTNA Steinway & Sons Collegiate Artist Piano Competition. El College of Charleston le ha otorgado los premios Edwin Davis Peacock 2003 y 2004 por la excelencia de sus interpretaciones. En el 2005, Villaverde obtuvo el Primer Premio en el Annual Meadows Concerto Competition de Southern Methodist University (Dallas, TX) y la escuela de arte de SMU le otorgo el premio de piano Von Mickwitz. Estando en Cuba, fue ganador del segundo premio en el Concurso de piano de la Union Nacional de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba en 1999 y fue nombrado "Laureado del Arte" por el Instituto Superior de Arte. Villaverde estudió en el Conservatorio Alejandro García Caturla, con la profesora Virginia de la Osa, y en la Escuela Nacional de Arte, con el pianista y compositor Andrés Alén, con el cual continuó sus estudios en el Instituto Superior de Arte. En el ano 2001 Villaverde obtuvo una beca completa para continuar sus estudios en la Escuela de Arte del College of Charleston, Carolina del Sur, EEUU, con el pianista Uruguayo Enrique Graf. Luego de graduarse con honores del College of Charleston, Villaverde fue aceptado para entrar en la clase del maestro Joaquin Achucarro para realizar sus estudios de maestria con una beca completa en Meadows School of the Arts en Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas. Villaverde tambien ha recibido clases de los maestros Jorge Luis Prats, Ilana Vered, Alessio Bax, Alfred Mouledous y Leonel Morales.Villaverde no solo recibio su Maestria de Musica de Southern Methodist University sino tambien un Certificado de Artista en Piano. Se encuentra actualmente haciendo sus estudios de Doctorado en Piano con el pianista y compositor estadounidense Dr. Floyd con beca completa en la Universidad de Miami. Ademas ensena en dicha institucion como profesor asistente. | |
