| In the year 488 B.C., long before there was mention of Alexander, or Ceasar. Before Patton, or Monty. Long before all of you were born, including the man you consider your savior, there was me. I once ruled the great military state known as Sparta. We were to be respected by all Greeks, and by far the superior military force of our day. In the year 480 B.C the Gods called all of Greece to war against the Persian Empire. Such swine they were, invading the mother land we so dearly loved. Although we were not united, we were one people against these foes.
In the fateful year of 480 B.C. I led 300 noble Spartans, into battle against the largest empire at that time. Xerxes led his army against mine at Thermopylae. An oracle stated that I must lose my life if Sparta was to be saved. For 2 days my soldiers held back 10000 Persian elite guards. We had the high ground for ourselves. After the second day a Greek scum named Ephialtes betrayed us to the Persians (curse him to Hades) and informed Xerxes of a separate path through Thermopylae. However, at the end of the 3rd day, they brought out their arrows because my men were defending my slain body. We had no swords left, and to save their lives they killed the rest of my men from above. "Today we will fight in the shade." one man said, as the arrows blocked out the sun. On that day, we died. Our loses were few compared to the thousands that lost their lives from the Persian side. Due to our valiant defeat, we gave hope to all of Greece. Within time, Greece would drive the Persians back to the East, forever altering history. Go, tell the Spartans, stranger passing by, That here, obedient to their laws, we lie. |
