Diese Seite ist seit dem 14.Januar 2007 Online Vielfältige musikalische Einflüsse John Legend (bürgerlich Stephens) wuchs in Ohio auf, wo er allen erdenklichen musikalischen Einflüssen von Gospel bis HipHop ausgesetzt war. Während seiner Zeit an der Universität von Pennsylvania - im Hauptfach studierte er Englisch - fand Legend die Zeit, seine eigene Musik zu machen, Alben aufzunehmen, bei Talentshows und "Open Mic"-Abenden aufzutreten oder den Chor der örtlichen Kirche zu leiten. Seine neunjährige Tätigkeit als Musik- und Chorleiter an der "Bethel A.M.E. Church" im Nordosten Pennsylvanias beendete er erst ein paar Monate bevor er die Arbeit an "Get Lifted" begann. 1998 bekam John erstmals einen Vorgeschmack, was es bedeutet, Erfolg zu haben: Auf dem Stück "Everything Is Everything" von Lauryn Hills mehrfach Grammy-preisgekröntem Solodebütalbum "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" spielte er Piano. Weitere Erfahrungen sammelte er in der Folgezeit mit Songs an der Ostküste, wo er im Vorprogramm größerer R&B-Acts spielte. Nebenbei nahm er einige Live-Alben auf und verkaufte sie bei den Shows. Bekanntschaft mit Kanye West 2001 machte ihn ein Zimmergenosse mit dem seinerzeit aufstrebenden Produzenten/Rapper Kanye West bekannt. Ein Jahr später war er bereits fester Bestandteil in Wests Kreativ-Team und wirkte an Produktionen von Talib Kweli, Common, Mary J Blige und Wests genialem 2004-Breakthrough-Album "The College Dropout" mit. 2003 war Legend der erste Künstler, den Kanye West für seine Produktionsgesellschaft "KonMan Entertainment" (später umbenannt in "Getting Out Our Dreams") unter Vertrag nahm, ein Deal mit Columbia Records folgte im Mai 2004. Im Vorfeld von der Kritik hoch gelobt, enterte "Get Lifted" drei Tage nach Weihnachten 2004 die Billboard Top 200 schließlich auf Anhieb auf Platz sieben. Vom Session- zum Solokünstler Bis 2003 war John Legend ein angesehener Session-Musiker. Heute ist er ein Künstler, der belegt, dass wirkliches Talent tatsächlich noch von Bedeutung ist - und anerkannt wird. "Once Again", sein neues Album, ist ein Pop/Soul-Album, dem man die Kreativität seines Schöpfers und der Produzentenriege Raphel Saadiq, Kanye West, Craig Street und will.i.am anmerkt. Letzterer war es auch, dem John die Vorabsingle "Save Room" verdankt - ein optimistisches Liebeslied, das inspiriert wurde von dem Stück "Stormy" der Sixties-Formation "Classics IV". Wenn man John Legend fragt, welche Auswirkungen der Erfolg der vergangenen Jahre auf ihn hatte, antwortet er: "Ich bin ganz einfach glücklicher. Nicht, weil ich Grammys gewonnen und viele Platten verkauft habe, sondern weil es sehr erfüllend ist, dass dies alles auf Grund von Dingen passiert, die man sehr, sehr gerne tut. Dass man sieht, wie Musik ein erhebendes Gefühl vermitteln kann und wie man von überall auf der Welt ein positives Feedback bekommt - das gibt mir Tag für Tag ein besseres Gefühl."
