| Sherry Scott is the consummate headliner with a distinctive style that sets her apart and pleases audiences. In her total commitment to performance, Sherry has achieved warmth and vulnerability that audiences appreciate and respond to. As a teenager she was attracted to the great performers and soon began to make music, records, and history with some of the best.
Hailing from the windy city of Chicago, Sherry Scott is the original female vocalist with Earth, Wind and Fire, helping to create a sound and image that influenced not only other groups, but, the industry as well. She composed and sang lead on the groups first hit single, "I Think About Loving You".
Sherry's three year stint with Earth, Wind and Fire was her first international commercial venture. However, her basic training finds its roots in Jazz. As one of the early members of the pioneering Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), Sherry recorded with Richard (Muhal) Abrams and Joseph Jarman in Chicago. In the more traditional vein, she composed and recorded with the late Eddie Harris and toured nationally with Freddie Hubbard
Sherry attributes her vocal stylings with having been influenced by Lorez Alexander and the late Betty Carter. Her associations with Hugh Masekela, Mongo Santamaria, the late Leon Thomas and Pharaoh Sanders have added original and creative dimensions to her performance. Often called a drummer's singer, her intense personal appearances excite a crowd and forces them to beg for more
While living in New York Sherry worked with quite a few of the musicians who live there. During two tours to Europe with Henry Threadgill's "Circus-Circus" Orchestra Sherry developed close friendships with Cellist, Akua Dixon Turre'. Today she has her own string ensemble called "Quartette Indigo". Akua and her husband Steve Turre', one of the top trombonist and "Shell" musicians in the world, recorded a couple of sides for Sherry's upcoming Jazz CD. While in New York Sherry also met Dwight Brewster and a decade long musical association began. Together they created many songs that cover music from around the world
From the summer of 1994 through today, Sherry has performed various concerts for the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. She is also the 1994 recipient of the Musical Evening With Our Elders Award, presented by the African American Student Alliance of North Western University. In 1999 Ms. Scott is the recipient of the Afrique "Bob Marley" Music Award for cultural music growth in greater Chicago.
