About Me |
| Greetings. This is the Succour MySpace page.Succour is a biannual arts journal that promotes new fiction, poetry and artwork. Featuring new work from Ray Robinson, HP Tinker and Joolz Denby, the current issue is out now at Waterstone's, Blackwell's and independent bookshops across the country, and available to buy on-line at www.succour.org.“Literary journals are so often staid and boring, concentrating solely on the work of some clique-or-other,” says Succour’s managing editor Anthony Banks. “With Succour, we want to put a journal out there that people can pick up, and know that they’re getting a true representation of the best new writing from around the country.”Currently we're editing issue 7, 'Animals', which will be out on May 1. The deadline for submissions has now closed - but watch this space. This page is run by myself, Max Dunbar. I'm a Manchester-based writer and regional editor of Succour. I've recently finished a full-length novel and sometimes contribute short stories and articles to various print and web journals. I'll talk to anyone who has talent and takes pleasure in and has a commitment to reading and writing. | |
My Interests |
| Contemporary fiction, poetry and artwork and left-wing politics. | |
I'd like to meet:I edited my profile at Freeweblayouts.net , check out these Myspace Layouts! |
Music:Currently I'm listening to REM, Aim and the Doors. |
Movies:I've been going to Manchester's Cornerhouse bar/cinema for almost three years, and have seen two films there. This should tell you something. |
Television:I watch no television except for classic comedy - South Park, Red Dwarf, Green Wing, Peep Show. |
Books:I'm an avid book lover and can't endure so much as twenty-minute train journey without a novel to read.My favourite writers are probably Stephen King, Martin Amis, Irvine Welsh, Carl Hiaasen and Michel Houellebecq. These five have been an enduring pleasure and influence during my writing life, and I don't think there are any others that come close in terms of story and language. I'm also into the great American writers: Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Faulkner, Charles Bukowski and Hunter S. Thompson, plus William Blake and the Romantic poets.I am a political junkie, and read a lot of nonfiction by left writers like George Orwell, Christopher Hitchens and Nick Cohen - 'muscular liberals', to use Madeliene Bunting's classic phrase. I'm also a fan of the recent explosion in secularist thought led by Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris. |
Heroes:Off the top of my head: Thom Paine, Kanan Makiya, Aayan Hirsi Ali, Maryam Namazie, Hunter S Thompson, Irvine Welsh. |
