About Me

Sounds Underground creates opportunities for young composers to have their music performed by professional musicians of the highest calibre, giving them a platform for their music at a crucial stage in their careers. It collaborates with composers, performers and other artists and allows creative people to realise their visions. Launched in London in November 2004, Sounds Underground has already commissioned nine new works and performed music by seventeen young composers.

Sounds Underground aims
-To commission emerging composers and to encourage regular performances of their music

-To collaborate with composers and performers to create innovative programmes

-To draw in new audiences for contemporary music

Two highlights of 2007, so far, have been the performance by Guy Johnston and Tom Poster of Dylan Pugh's Sonata for Cello and Piano, a Sounds Underground commission, and the première of a new arrangement for four hands of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, given by the pianists Alasdair Beatson and Iain Farrington.

Sounds Underground organised a concert in collaboration with the record label Sargasso, which took place on May 17th. The programme included the world première of John Herford's Piano Trio, written while the composer was at Cambridge but never performed because of the difficulty of the score. Ensemble Na Mara, with Oliver Coates ('cello), were able to bring it to life for the audience and the composer

The next concert includes new works by Elena Langer, Henry Ng and Bernard Hughes. Sounds Underground is currently planning a new programme of events for young composers . These will begin in the spring of 2008.

We are currently looking for volunteers and would be delighted to hear from graduates hoping to gain experience in music administration.

The organisation is supported by leading composers George Benjamin and Robert Saxton, both patrons of Sounds Underground.

Sounds Underground Concerts is a registered charity, no. 1108770.
