With the power of High on Fire, the technicality of Mastodon, the groove of Clutch, and the thunder of Torche, L.A.’s Behold! The Monolith has the potential to be one of the best metal outfits in modern music at a very early age in the band’s history.
Technically the band was formed in September of 2007 from the ashes of Kevin McDade and Scott Werren’s various past musical projects when they met with Matt Price, a long time acquaintance of Scott’s. Matt had just finished with an ill fated project with members of 16 and Crippled Black Phoenix, “engine-ear’d” by Billy Anderson, and was looking for something completely fresh. With similar influences and musical styles, the jam sessions produced some great riffs that were quickly realized as a few really good songs. The three enjoyed the dynamic of the power trio and Kevin picked up vocal duties, which he had never done before. After a few months of playing together, and adopting the name Behold! The Monolith from an old inside joke of Matt’s, the band didn’t seem to be heading in any sort of direction and the three gentlemen parted ways, Kevin swearing off music altogether until he felt “motivated” again.
Luckily it only took about two months for Kevin to become “motivated” and he contacted Matt in February of 2008. The two began a studio process of writing and demo-ing tracks in Matt’s house with Pro-Tools drum machines, which spawned the first three demos of “Land of the Midnight Sun”, “Battle of Balls Deep”, and “The Elders Gone Wild” which they used as a template to find the right skins man. By the luck of the draw, Crazy Craig at KNAC.com contacted them about playing “Land of the Midnight Sun” on his Sunday metal show and gave them the much needed publicity to find the right man for the job. It didn’t take long for applicants to start contacting the two about try-outs. It took even less time for Matt and Kevin to find Bobby Padavick. He seemed to share the same vision, taste, and musical ability as the duo and as a plus, knew all three songs at the first try-out. The decision was easy.
With a new fire and motivation within the band, they went about writing new material and fine tuning the songs for an aural assault. Within a matter of weeks the three were playing shows all over Los Angeles, a few of the first being opening gigs for Century Media recording artists Intronaut, Translation Loss’ Mouth of the Architect, and doom/stoner metal legends Trouble. The next step was recording a proper EP. The three went to work tracking at Gault River Studios with Kevin Keller (Bill Ward) and had three killer tracks finished within weeks.
This puts us in the present. With a fine catalog of songs, deep talent, and a wealth of potential, Behold! The Monolith released their first EP in October of 2008 with high anticipation and even higher expectations. People have likened them to “Heavy Black Sabbath” or “a modern mish mash of Motorhead and Sleep” and the musical progression can only grow from there. Don’t be surprised when you hear big things from Los Angeles’ Behold! The Monolith.
