About Me

- MARCO FIUME (March 22, 1972 / March 21, 2002) R.I.P. -

"..... to remember Marco, a young man, a passionate blues player from Italy, who devoted his life to the blues....."

- Marco grew up near Rossano, and later lived in Bologna, Italy. He picked up the guitar in his late teens as a hobby, but became more serious after he discovered and fell in love with the recordings of American blues and jazz artists such as T-Bone Walker, Johnny “Guitar” Watson, B.B. King, Tiny Grimes, Charlie Christian and especially Barney Kessel. He began playing in local bands, but was not getting the musical education he desired, so in 1996 he set out for Los Angeles to try to learn firsthand from some of the West Coast greats like Kid Ramos, Alex Schultz, Rick Holmstrom and his hero Junior Watson. Marco accomplished all this and more. Besides being embraced as a musician and friend by all these people and many more, he soon became one of L.A.’s most requested guitarists, playing with artists like Junior Watson, Johnny Dyer, Lynwood Slim, Sweet Betty Journey, Rick Holmstrom, Candye Kane, Alex Schultz, James Harman, Rod Piazza, Janiva Magness, Jeff Turmes, Robert Lucas, Jimmy Morello, Kid Ramos, Kirk Fletcher, Kim Wilson, Ronnie J. Weber, Ryan Hartt, Carl S. Leyland, Nick Curran, Johnny Viau, Tom Mahon, Jeffrey P. Ross, Paul Fasulo, Bill Stuve, David Bernson, James Intveld, Randy Beckett, and others. He also had his own blues/jazz instrumental group, the LO-Fi’S with Stevie Utstein, Ron Dziubla and Donny Gruendler. Marco’s guitar work was smooth, yet raw, with a unique tone and sense of swing, evoking shades of the players he emulated, but coming through with his how voice, genuine and impassioned. As Rick Holmstrom put it: “ People were just beginning to realize how good Marco was”. Certainly he was destined to join Rick and the rest of his heroes as one of the top guitarists on the West Coast. When ha played live, he was not a “safe” player. He always “went for it” with passion and gusto, and you could really feel the music he was making. This is especially evident in much of the LO-Fi’S live material. This was is baby, and where the “Bluesy Side of Jazz” and “The Jazzy Side of Blues” met, he shone exceptionally bright. What we have done here is try to provide an overview of the music ha made and with whom he made it, both with his own project the LO-Fi’S and in his various recordings with some of the mentioned artists. In all cases it is the passion, swing, and drive of Marco’s playing that we hope you will hear and feel.
