I’ve always had a love for music especially Soul & R&B music. I grew up listening to Soul music (especially Motown & Disco Soul) which my Mum used to blast out whenever it was on the T.V. or Radio so from there I followed Soul & R&B music. Then when I became a teenager I started listening to a lot of Hip-Hop as well as R&B… it was then when one of my sister’s mentioned to me about being a DJ because of my love for that music but I never took it that serious until I started clubbing a few years later. I used to try & make it to all the R&B & Hip-Hop Nights around Hull (back in the days when the Roadblock’s first started) even if it was during the week & I had work the next day I would still make it out because it would always be a great night that you couldn’t miss! I had my favourite DJ’s but it wasn’t till this one Hip-Hop night I went to that I had a real love for the local DJ’s that were doing their thing… My friend had said to me about going to a Hip-Hop night that was going on at University so I decided to go. I was blown away by a team of DJ’s called the Madd Skilz Team (one of which was “Doc Jnr” who later on I got to DJ with many times in the clubs). They showed me that there was far more to do with a turntable then just letting the record play. Watching them scratch & do little tricks with the same record was something I’d never seen live before or maybe was it because at bigger events I’d never been up close to see the DJ doing that sort of thing but it was from that night that I wanted to get my own set of turntables & learn to DJ.I started buying the odd record long before I got my turntables. I knew a set of turntables were expensive so I started to save up. I also at that time had a massive CD collection but I decided to sell them to my friends so I could come up with the money quicker (don’t worry I recorded my collection on to mini disk). After a while I saw an ad for a pair of turntables so I rang to see if they were still up for sale. The person on the phone told me to come and have a look the next day so I was like “yeah, ok”. The next day when I went round I knocked on the door & to my surprise it was a guy I already knew called Darren Goulbourne who had the turntables for sale. I was a familiar face to him as I was a regular in the bars & clubs he was a DJ at. He is also the promoter of Roadblock (a big R&B club night which he later on made me a resident DJ.That was it… I had my turntables, I got my mixer & from then on I just practised & practised!As for my love of Reggae Dancehall, I never really knew much about it until I started to DJ at different events where I would include playing commercial Dancehall along with my R&B set. This is when I wanted to get more into this style of music. The thing I like about Reggae Dancehall is it has a whole different & uplifting vibe compared to what R&B music has, so it’s another style of music I love! PAST EVENTS! SHOUT OUTS!
