About Me
Having inherited the passion for music from his father Zeljko, Marko Popovic a.k.a. Mental Code started his music career at the age of 14 when he took a job at the local radio station and became a host of the “Rap Attack” radio show. It was a fun time, but things started looking much more interesting when he moved to Zagreb in order to attend the high-school. It wasn’t long till he met the right people and got to play his first gig under the “Mental Destruction” alias, playing hard core and hard techno. Later on he changed his name to “Mental Code” and started playing his signature multi-style sets that proved to be the right recipe for delivering smashingly good parties. He was employed as a promoter by “Promo Media” company in the period between 1994. and ’96. in order to supervise the organization of major events such as the concerts of bands like Public Enemy, Ice-T, Rolling Stones, Bodycount, Eros Ramazzoti etc. Working as a promoter enabled him to gain a lot of useful experience, meet some wonderful people, many great artists and have a lot of fun. Worth mentioning is his close collaboration with ”Timing Booking” agency from Berlin (respect 2 Armin :). So far the biggest event in his career, the “Galactica” rave, he organized together with his friend Kresimir Bikic, a.k.a. Bix. It was a massive event that went very well and signified the beginning of a mad party season. At that time, he also met Maxxxter, his roommate and a music producer. Together, they partied a lot and had a memorable gig at the “Shakespeare” club in Split, 1995. Mental Code decided to temporarily retire from the scene in the year 2000. Six years later he got active again and, this time as a writer and also a music composer, re-established his cooperation with Maxxxter who had then just got back from Amsterdam and created the “Body Jack Schallplatten” record label. Also worth mentioning is the music collaboration with Drazen Franolic, a famous Croatian instrumentalist. Mental Code’s DJ philosophy states that there’s too much hi-quality music available on the electronic music scene and, in order to NOT miss the most of it, suggests that it’s unnecessary to limit your playing style to only one genre, but rather fuse different ones into a fluid, yet coherent whole, which is pretty much what he does when he plays out. Besides doing music, Marko also writes poetry and has already published his second book, a collection of postmodern urban poetry which got great reviews from both media and critics. These two books - "Putnik Usijane Glave" and "Nenapisana Pjesma" – are limited edition prints in which Marko explores himself, the world and life around him by projecting these observations through prisms of philosophy and irony.
