| Helen Simons is a community radio broadcaster her show The JazzXpress Caravan was originally developed for Jazz Radio FM94.1 on the Gold Coast . The JazzXpress Caravan is formatted to present a variety of yesterday’s American Jazz legends and today’s young lions. From Jelly Roll Morton to Christian Scott, from Graeme Bell to Ben Winkelman, and everything else in between. Simons plays a sophisticated set of classic jazz,swing, blues,latin recordings and new releases.Helen has had an extensive 30 year career as a teacher and university lecturer both in Australia and the U.K. Her love for jazz and its various styles began from a young age, learning the piano and guitar. Whilst studying abroad her music interest led to DJ work in West Berlin and London nightclubs . Simons talents also extend to cameo roles in Australian films and has worked on the production of 4 award winning ABC documentaries on Bali.THE AUSTRALIAN JAZZ HOUR IS DEVOTED TO NEW INDEPENDENT JAZZ RELEASES, AUSTRALIAN JAZZ LEGENDS & the brightest stars from under the Southern Cross.The program introduces listeners to high profile and emerging artists from the Brit Jazz, Nordic Jazz, Euro Jazz and Asia Pacific Jazz scenes.Simons regularly enriches her playlist by dedicating sets to Latin Jazz.... the unique blend of black American music and pulsating Caribbean rhythms, exposing listeners to artists such as Machito, Bebo Valdes, Ray Baretto and Eddie Palmieri. Placing her audiences first, Helen offers a one-on-one relationship with the listener that feels like a friend who has stopped by to play her latest CD purchases.Helen Simons continues to entertain people by communicating her love for jazz.No matter how big her listener-ship gets, it remains very much an intimate circle of friends thanks to her ability to talk as if she’s talking directly to you.
