I enjoyed this tale a great deal, and will look for more of Daniel I. Russell’s work. Great visuals, superb delivery, this is one read you don’t want to miss out on! Favourite image: He held his other hand to his throat, trying to keep it closed. Shudder! Favourite line: Skittering pictures meandered through her mind, racing off each time she tried to grasp one and hold it down. Rating 5/5 EURO REVIEWS Shutterbug is a story with a high suspense factor. Daniel I. Russell knows how to get the reader's attention. As soon as you start reading, you are inside the story, feeling sorry for the main character. Sometimes I felt like screaming to her “hey girl, start protecting yourself!”. In the end though, she proves herself to be strong. The ending of this story is very surprising in another way too! You’ll enjoy it. Rating 4/5 - Great! A visit to a photographic studio results in more than an album of endearing snapshots for Jess Stevenson. Instead of a decorative memento, she leaves scarred by haunting images of the horror that occurred. Daniel Russell’s story leaves a similar lasting impression that hangs in the readers mind to develop, making sure you’ll never look at a photographer the same again. Now say, cheese. Shaun Jeffrey, author of Evilution and Voyeurs of Death Every once in a while you stumble on a book that just kind of punches you in the face and then smears fecal matter on you, just to make sure you feel dirty after getting beat up. This is totally that book. Like it isn't brutal enough that the book starts out with a young lady who is going to get her pictures taken, being molested by a pedophile--the guy then has to butcher her mother when she goes to confront him? Then pile on top of that, that after years of therapy and some serious psychological issues, the psycho seems to have returned to terrorize her some more. The problem is, the killer should still be in prison, and that is where the book gets interesting. At its heart this is a mystery, all be it a particularly nasty one. As the woman struggles to gain closure to her ordeal in the midst of trying to find out who is terrorizing her, we are treated to some seriously messed up self-examination, and some even more messed up murders and psychological torture. It is just well-played out, and quite well-thought out, and though sometimes the plot was a little telegraphed, overall this one kept me on the edge of my seat (well at least hunched over my monitor). This is a great read, and another stand out from Wild Child Publishing (www.wildchildpublishing.com). Gabriel Llanas - The Dred Bookshelf, Vault of Punk Horror What starts out as a visit to a reclusive professional photographer believed to be worthy of capturing the essence of an attractive, innocent fifteen year old girl quickly turns into a nightmare with a click and a whir of the camera. It is a nightmare that sets off a chain reaction of terror six years later when what has been forgotten and shelved into distant memory returns with a startling and brutal vengeance. No one is safe when the Shutterbug gets under your skin. This story deceptively pulls the reader into not only a sleeping nightmare, but a waking one as well. As a young adult of twenty-one, newly graduated Jess Stevenson, both the story’s main victim and heroine, is ceaselessly taunted by a horrific tragedy she endured six years earlier. Though her assailant is jailed, disturbing events related to that long ago tragedy begin to occur, yet Jess alone is convinced of the correlation. When she discovers her best friend dead and stuffed inside a moving box and then her wheelchair-bound father mysteriously missing from his home, Jess must face her fears and revisit the now long abandoned and dilapidated photography studio where it all began. Do keep in mind that Daniel Russell is an English author, and as such some words he uses in the story may appear misspelled or unfamiliar to American readers. Likewise, certain of his characters’ behaviors may seem odd to American readers. Having said that, the last twenty pages are a heart-pounding rollercoaster ride of suspense the likes of which I have rarely had the privilege of experiencing. The beginning chapters of the story do a fine job of introducing the characters and setting the scene of events to come. There were a few spelling errors and words left out towards the middle of the story, though they were minor enough that a speed reader could easily overlook them. Also, the writing towards the middle seemed rather rigid to the point that I started to lose interest, though only mildly. If more attention were paid to this area, I do believe Shutterbug could be compared to some of the top authors in the genre. The fear he creates in this novella is disturbing because it could happen to you or someone you love. It's a parent's worst nightmare. I can't wait to read Russell's next novel. R.
