When you are close to the edge to nowhere, when the grey clouds of doubt and resignation threaten to suffocate you, when the only hope left is the jump into the chasm; then you have come to know the devastating world that the songs from D.A.M.N. describe. In the year 2001 the band from Braunschweig, Germany, was founded. From the beginning the band aimed at playing hard and complex music. According to this even the songs of the first demo appeared as pushing, fast and melodic Deathmetal. The lyrics were screamed and growled by female shouter Antonie. Though trying to compare the band with other well-known bands like Arch Enemy, Amon Amarth or My dying Bride, the band already had evolved their own sound. In order to increase the brutality of the music a second guitar player joined the band in 2003. Since that time the band played more and more shows, capturing the hearts of the fans and travelled through the entire country, gaining a lot of live-experience. D.A.M.N. played at different festivals, for instance the Rockharz-Festival. Two years in a row they joined the Wacken Metal Battle where they could give a proof of their musical skills and especially the outstanding spirit of performing the songs in national and international surroundings - just like the Netherlands and Denmark. In 2005 the band produced their first professional album, which got very well reviewed in magazines such as Rock Hard and Legacy and online-magazines like metal-inside. So it was no wonder that the album aroused interest in the metalscene. At the end of 2006 the drummer left the band. Shortly after a new member was found who pushed the band even further with his drum-abilities and the pleasure in playing metal. So there is no doubt that the band will achieve even more in the future. The passion of making music, the striving for progress and a bunch of live-experience turned D.A.M.N. into a band that doesn’t give a damn about trends, but shows that good music is timeless. The German press about our new CD "Vermaechtnis" Rockhard (Dezember 2006) Verdammt! Ich bin platt! In Grund und Boden gestampft vom Demo dieser Band. So hab ich mich seit "SYL" von Strapping Young Lad nicht mehr überfahren gefühlt. Diese Band besorgt uns eine Breitband-Death-Metal-Attacke, die ausschliesslich verbrannte Erde hinterlässt. Hinzu kommen pfiffige Gitarrenmelodien im Stile von Hypocrisy und wahrlich furioser Brüllgesang, der laut Bandinfo von einem Mädel namens Toni stammen soll - was man irgendwie nicht recht fassen kann. Erwähnt man noch die geschickt gesetzten Breaks sowie den Wechsel zwischen Highspeed- und groovigen Midtempo-Parts, so ist die Beschreibung des Gesamtschauspiels mit Namen D.A.M.N. abgeschlossen. Mit so viel Spielwitz und Vielfalt schafft es die Truppe sogar, ein Stück wie den achtminütigen Opener "Tränen der Einsamkeit" packend zu gestalten. Es müsste mich schwer wundern, wenn hier nicht demnächst ein Label zuschlagen würde, denn D.A.M.N. sind die beste Todesblei-Entdeckung seit langem. Legacy 01/2006, 11 Punkte Toni – nein nicht Marshall und auch nicht Himbeer-Toni – nein, dieser ist’ne blonde Frau und singt, growlt, bölkt und brüllt wie ein ganzer Mann. Währenddessen sorgen ihre vier männlichen Begleiter aus Salzgitter für ordentlich death-metallische Sound-Kulisse. Nur die Richtung des Todes festzulegen, das ist nicht wirklich einfach. Denn D.A.M.N. decken auf ihrem zweiten Demonstrations-Tonträger ein wahrlich weites Genre-Spektrum ab. Da gibt die technische Seite à la Death, es gibt Grooviges nach britischem Vorbild oder auch melodischere Sachen, die nach Schweden klingen. Alle Anteile aber haben eins gemeinsam, nachdem sie durch die Mische der Niedersachsen gegangen sind: Sie knattern, rocken, treten Popöchen, haben ’Wumms’ und machen Spaß. Die Songs klingen eben nicht nach Stil-Mischmasch, nicht nach Death Metal-Patchwork, nein, sie wirken geschlossen. Auch in Sachen Soundqualität ist den Stahlstädtern Einiges gelungen, allerdings klingt nach höchst subjektivem Empfinden das Schlagzeug bisweilen ein wenig dünn-pappig. Und von den deutschen Texten der Dame ist ohne Textblatt nur höchst wenig zu verstehen – was aber die Durchschlagskraft von Tonis Organ eher noch unterstützt. Metal-inside (www.metal-inside.de) Ich habe keine Ahnung, mit wem diese Band schon alles verglichen wurde. Zu Zeiten ihres ersten, schon sehr hörenswerten Demos habe ich D.A.M.N. irgendwo in die gemeinsame Schnittmenge aus CROWBAR, DISBELIEF und TOTENMOND gerückt, was auch im Nachhinein noch völlig gerechtfertigt ist. Nur haben die mittlerweile zum Quintett gewachsenen Salzgitteraner ihren alten Sound – völlig untypisch für eine Demoband – bis auf wenige verbliebene Fragmente völlig über Bord geworfen und präsentieren heute eine Allzweck – Wunderwaffe, die ihres Gleichen sucht. D.A.M.N. klingen weder nach ARCH ENEMY (Vergleich Nummer eins, weil da auch ..ne Frau rüpelt), MY DYING BRIDE, IN FLAMES oder AMON AMARTH. Und mit Hardcore, Metalcore oder dieser ganzen Schnitzel, - und Bierhasserfraktion haben sie, bis auf ein paar Fans vielleicht, auch nix am Hut! Vielmehr fallen mir, wenn schon überhaupt, annähernde Vergleiche mit DEATH, BOLT THROWER oder IMMORTAL ein, deren indirekte Einflüsse immer wieder durchscheinen. Der größte Gewinn für die Truppe war definitiv der zweite Gitarrist André, der vermutlich auch den größten Anteil am „neuen“ Sound von D.A.M.N. hat. Viel melodischer als noch auf dem Vorgänger ist man geworden, dabei aber gleichzeitig härter und vertrackter. Die fünf Stücke des Demos gehen insgesamt über 35 Minuten, besitzen bis auf den superben Opener „Gefangen Im Ich“ durchweg Überlänge und sind auf ihre Art trotzdem sehr eingängig, vorausgesetzt, man steht auf anspruchsvollen Düstermetal! Auch auf die „verkaufsfördernden“, cleanen Vocals wurde verzichtet; Sängerin Toni kotzt sich noch immer, teilweise unterstützt von Bassist Mat, der ultratief growlt, die schwarze Seele aus dem Leib und kann auch mit ihren deutschen Texten punkten, die allerdings nicht ganz frei von Klischees sind. Gerade die drei längsten Stücke, „Tränen Der Einsamkeit“ (Highlight!!!), „Illusion Des Lebens“ und „Neuordnung“, kommen für mich von der Intensität / Atmosphäre her schon ganz nah an Düsterhymnen wie „Symbolic“, „Withstand The Fall Of Time“ oder „With Strength I Burn“ heran, obwohl stilistische Vergleiche kaum wirklich passen. D.A.M.N. sind höchst eigenständig, haben Eier, setzen einen dicken Hucken auf gängige Trends und haben hier ein richtig fett und professionell produziertes Demo in der Hinterhand, für das sie hoffentlich bald ein Label finden werden und das sie an die Spitze der deutschen Hartwurstszene katapultieren wird. Aber das ist nach wie vor Aufgabe der Fans… |
