Once upon a time...
In 1607, between Bombay and Delhi, the capital Agra, led by the powerful dynasty Mogholes, the prince Shah Jahan met Arjumand Banu Begum, the daughter of his prime minister, at a bazaar when he was 14 and she was 15. It was a love at first sight for both of them. Their wedding took place five years later.
To show her how much he loved her, the Sultan has renamed his wife Mumtaz Mahâl which means "The chosen one of the palace".
It had never been seen a couple more in love, happier, more fulfilled.
But in 1631, Mumtaz died giving birth to their fourteenth child. It is said that Shah Jehan was so heartbroken, that he locked himself in his private chambers for eight days and when he finally emerged his hair had turned white.
This affliction plunged Jahan and his empire in a deep mourning, which lasted two years, during which all popular music and public amusements, all perfumes, cosmetics, jewelry, and brightly colored clothes were forbidden.
So he decided to immortalize his love in a huge monument as an eternal home for the corpse of his beloved.
It is the pain of Jahan, which was the basis for the foundation of what would become the most memorable symbol of love in the world.
Much more than a magnificent white marble mausoleum, the Taj is a tragic love song.
Proof of love built in a colossal white marble, glittering under the sun of India, changing color according to the hours of the day: in the morning, the white marble dome gives off a rosy reflection; while in the evening, the reflection is a pearly white. When the moon is out, the Taj Mahal gives off a golden shiny reflection. These colors are said to show the many moods of a female...

En 1607, entre Bombay et Delhi, la capitale Agra, dirigée par la puissante dynastie des Mogholes. Le cinquième empereur, Shah Jahan fut lors d'un bal, conquis par la beauté éclatante d'une jeune fille, celle du premier ministre Arjumand. Elle était âgée alors de quinze ans. Quelques années plus tard, le souverain put enfin épouser celle qu'il aimait.
Le Sultan, voulant honorer l'élue de son coeur, lui témoigna son estime en la rebaptisant Mumtaz Mahâl qui signifie "l'Elue du Palais"
Jamais on ne vit couple plus amoureux, plus heureux, plus épanoui.
Mais en 1631, Mumtaz succomba en donnant la vie à leur quatorzième enfant. On dit alors que le veuf, fou de chagrin, s'enferma huit jours dans ses chambres, ne faisant aucune apparition publique. Lorsqu'il en ressortit, sa barbe et ses cheveux avaient blanchis.
Cette affliction plongea Jahan et son empire dans un deuil profond qui dura deux années, pendant lesquelles toutes les festivités furent annulées et où aucune musique n'émana du royaume. Tout ornement vestimentaire, bijouterie, parfum, ou tout autre symbole de joie ou de vie furent interdits.
Il décida alors d'immortaliser son amour dans une fondation gigantesque qui accueillerait la dépouille de sa bien-aimée.
C'est la douleur de Jahan qui servit de base aux fondations de ce qui allait devenir le Taj Mahâl, fantasmagorie de l'être aimé.
Bien plus qu’un magnifique mausolée de marbre blanc, le Taj est un tragique chant d’amour.
Une preuve d'amour colossale bâtie dans le marbre blanc, scintillant sous le soleil indien, changeant de couleur selon les heures du jour, rappelant les changements d'humeur de la femme: rose à l'Aurore, éclatant de blancheur à midi, doré au couchant, lumineux sous la clarté lunaire...
