| How did Big Spence receive the name Big Spence you ask?!?Well… The first project Spence worked on as an actor was “Pursuit of Happyness,” where he met Will Smith. Big Spence started off being called Spencer which is his last name. Everyone that new him called him Spencer due to the fact that he was an athlete through school and prior to acting professionally he was a football coach for the Albany Bobcats where they referred to him as “Coach Spencer”Spencer started off the day as an extra in the film. After being placed by the AD (assistant director) Spencer and a couple of other extras were told to pan mime (talk without sound). Spencer didn’t know what that meant at the time but he didn’t want to look like a fool. Anyway… young Spencer caught on and spotted Mr. Smith for the first time. Other extras were there also and many of them advised Spencer not to talk to Mr. Smith due to the fact that he would get kicked off of the set. Only family knew at the time but Will Smith was Spencer favorite male actor so getting kicked off the set wasn’t an issue for Mr. Spencer.About 20mins later Spencer decided to introduce himself to Mr. Smith but (in a professionally manner of course) and that’s exactly what he did. Will Smith was standing with Mr. Muccino (the director), and he met both of them together. Will Smith then turned to Muccino and asked if Spencer would be good for a stand-in role, and they both agreed that he would. Will Smith then asked “what does your friends call you and he replied with the “Spencer because He’s an athlete story.” He then looked at Spencer and replied… “Big Spence.”Spencer has been going by Big Spence every since.
