There is a moment where the lyric takes complete shape...or a particular sound finds its way upon the musical canvas...this is where I live. I have lived here as long as I remember...writing my first silly song at age 3 called "Mike":

Up until I was 13 years old, I took piano lessons with Christiana Jeanmarie and hated them. My dad would say, "Why don't you go practice", and in my head I thought, "Why don't you?" It would take discovering Band-Nerdism as a catalyst to bring me to my musical senses.

From 12-17, the alto saxophone became my main instrument. Parades, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Field Show - all of these moments bound me to music even more - Eric Mabrey, a true soul, musician and philanthropist taught us to listen to more then a melody. He taught us to admire the instruments for their individuality and the beautiful masterpiece when combined.

Soon my love affair with the piano started again, as I discovered alternative music and a love for guitars. My dad bought me one when I was 15 and to this day, I have composed songs but do not really know EXACTLY what notes I'm playing. Not being able to play that well, I tried to recreate with my piano playing what I wanted to hear on guitar. My lyrics also began to become a weapon - used for expressions of love, apathy, empathy, revenge, hope, God, family and anything else that consumed my soul at the moment.

In college, I began scribbling songs on pieces of paper and used the residence hall piano and a small mini-tape recorder to record the music. I created my first demo with the help of my uncle, Lorenzo Pryor. Finally, I sang my own lyrics into a microphone for the first time ever and did my first harmonies. This is where the crossroads began...the two lives...the duality...the life of academics versus the life of music. I chose both...

2 albums later, 1 band after (Brian Farst and Kevin Costigan for life!), an alter ego production (In Lieu Of with Brian Chism) I have found my moment...where the lyric takes complete shape...or a particular sound finds its way upon the musical canvas. I enjoy creating beats...I'm like a kid in a candy store sitting there - starting with a heavy kick, a cool-ass string line, maybe some piano or guitar and the WEIRDEST sound imaginable on top of all that...then I sit in the car and write lyrics on many pieces of paper using my iPod or the cd player...

A big part of my vocal style has to due with all who inspire me...but most of all...my mother, Trena Steward, whose powerful vocals chords I inherited splashed with a little something of an anomaly in the tone. She taught me to not be afraid of aiming for that power note which sets a part the "singer" from the "sanger". She also taught me that it's okay to be me and to never give up my dreams. I am her reincarnate...and she is mine.
