About Me

Greetings everyone. This is the part of our page where we try to come up with interesting things to say and it’s hard to know how many people read all the way to the end. We are an eclectic bunch of older guys who have never given up our musical calling in spite of the constant (and misguided) pressure to find and maintain "real jobs". "Making middle age cool again" is one of our favorite quotes. We are all well versed in many styles and techniques and we all have a deep love for the classics. We all have musical college backgrounds as well. It is always fun to stretch our boundaries into the abstract and different but it is comforting to have those great influences as part our foundation. We love to write and perform good music, and see the process unfold all the way to a finished recording. Each one of us has decades of musical experience to lean on, such as playing in bands and various other combos, and all that experience comes to the fore in our music today. It has not always been easy, but we have had, so far, the patience and desire for clarity that one needs to make a band function. Many musicians have said that being in a band is like being married. There is a lot of truth to that. Personalities don’t always function together smoothly in close quarters, but this band, leaning on experience, has overcome much of what would have torn a younger band apart. We are proud of this and it gives us confidence in our future. We are just about ready to move into our studio here in Lawrence. One of us has invested in an old house which has been beautifully remodeled and he and one other person in our band will take up residence there. The house is perfectly laid out for a music studio. This is an exciting development and we feel it to be a huge step forward. Our first CD is about to be birthed as well. We will announce it’s completion and no doubt have a big release party. Stay tuned for that. In spite of all the talk about classics we love to rock. We love to be in the "eye of the tiger" on stage and feed on the excitement of the audience. One of the "catch 22s" of music is that to learn a song well, one tends to burn out on it because of all the repetitive rehearsal. The pay-off comes when the positive reactions from a live audience makes it fresh again. We have worked very hard to create and maintain integrity in our songs and instrumentals and are right now (Last part of March, 2008) adding two more original tunes to our line-up. To all of you who have just read to the end here, thanks for the attention and if you have never heard us perform, please come see us. Sincerely, Big Stack Daddy

Influences: Our influences are long and varied. There is not enough space here to list them all, but a few major ones can be mentioned. We all love the great ones; Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, The Beatles, Frank Zappa, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Jack Elliot, Hank Williams, Lefty Frizell, jazz greats, gospel and blues greats. The list seems endless.
Sounds Like: All the band members enjoy the sound we have, but are not really objective about it. Our audiences use adjectives such as fun, smooth, jazzy, melodic, etc. We bring many different styles into play. A little jazz, some rock, folk, folk rock, blues, classical, gospel, whatever works. We try to blend good quality with fun and excitement and according to our audiences we seem to be succeeding. We are grateful for all the positive feedback we have received.

Everyone knows that by the time musicians reach the age of 30 their chances of being on MTV sink down to almost zero. It is easy to understand why this is so. If you click on the "Blue Dolls" icon on ...
