About Me

Matthew Black, of Warren Ohio, most recently has appeared as Mr. Gobineau in The Medium, Reverend Blitch in Suzanna, Frank Maurrant in the Kansas City premier performance of Street Scene, Melchior in Amahl and the Night Visitors, and Ford in Falstaff.

While completing his Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Conservatory of Music, Matthew performances included The Reverend Hale in The Crucible, John Sorel in The Consul, Gérmont in La Traviata, Guglielmo in Cosi fan tutte, The Vicar in Albert Herring, and The Second Priest in The Magic Flute.

Matthew has also performed with the Kansas City Puccini Festival for the last five years singing Scarpia in Tosca, the title role in Gianni Schicci, Michele in Il Tabarro, Ping in Turandot, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly and Lescaut in Manon Lescaut. Matthew will return in 2008 singing Rambaldo Fernandez in La Rondine.

Rober Eisele of the Kansas City Star recently wrote, “As the scheming police chief Scarpia, Black delivered the goods both vocally and dramatically.”

Mr. Black’s has an active concert repertoire which includes Dubois’ The Seven Last Words of Christ, Faure’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah and Orff’s Carmina Burana. He has appeared as a guest soloist with the Independence Symphony as well as performing in numerous concerts and recitals in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Currently, Matthew sings as the Bass Section leader for Second Presbyterian Church in Kansas City. Matthew has devoted many years conducting community performances of Handel’s Messiah, as well as organizing benefit concerts for Habitat for Humanity. Matthew is a devoted husband to his wife Kelly and together they are raising two beautiful children, Rachel and Brady.
