My life playing Bass started over two decades ago when I was approached my senior year in High School by the Pianist and Drummer of my school's Vocal Jazz group requesting I play in that ensemble. At age ten, I had been given no other choice but to learn Piano if for no other reason than my two older siblings had already done so. And like them, once I turned twelve, I had to choose a 'band' instrument and sadly, Electric Guitar wasn't an option. So, for the stupidest of reasons, I’d picked the Trombone. Five years later, I finally and officially switched to Tuba and had already taken about five months of Guitar lessons from Portland Jazz Guitarist John Weaver. At this point the opportunity to play Bass was offered so I simply combined my knowledge of the bass cleft and the fingerings on the first four strings of the Guitar, along with a quick right hand finger style lesson from the groups Pianist, and more than half of my life later, I'm still playing Bass. Oddly enough, my introduction into playing original rock music came from the same Drummer and still my best friend, Sean, who approached me once again, only this time towards the end of our senior year. He simply informed me that I was joining his band, AFR. Over the course of the next two and a half years, AFR played numerous gigs and recorded two demos at the studio where I’d learned the fundamentals of recording. After Sean left, the band went on to form a group called 'Oh, Van Gough' which solidified an unfortunate trend; I would forever have to endure horrible band names. Names such as: - Inside out - Evil Pickle Heads - Crush - Zillaloud - Hydropods (ok, that one's kind of cool) - Meridian (also, not so bad) and - Grampa Analog and the Tone Manglers. This last band was be the first time Sean and I would play together in decades. Over the years, I have played Bass in a wide variety of styles from New Wave to Acid Jazz, and most of the interesting styles in between. I have managed to keep up on most of the six instruments I've learned, but Bass is and forever will be my 'voice', and even though I've gain as much experience as a freelance recording engineer, Bass is and forever will be my 'First Love'.New Bass Rig Test

Influences: I bought my first two records when I was Ten, KISS Rock n' Roll Over, and Aerosmith's ROCKS. I wanted to play electric guitar like every kid, but I was already learning to play music, so I thought it was going to be destiny. I eventually did learn and it was listening to groups like RUSH and YES, as well as all your classic rock bands from Zed Zeppelin to Van Helen that solidified me as a ROCKER. But it wasn't until I listened to my first RUSH album, 2112, that I realized this amazing thing happening in the low end. Then it was Yes, and then Genesis, and so on, that I came to realize that there is a difference between a Bass Player and a Bassist. In chronological order of influence, Geddy Lee, Flea, Les Claypool, and finally Michael Manring. I have been a fan of many players over the years, but those four had the most profound influence on me. And of all of the bands I'm in to, RUSH (2112 to Moving Pictures in particular) has still had the single most influence on me musically.
