monosylabikk was born in zielona gora, poland. his foray into the world of music began when he started to play the drums in a punk rock band. it wasn’t long before his fellow band mates cottoned on to his immense talent and filip decided to focus all of his time and energy on his music. midi controllers, turntables and drum kits all played their part in shaping his thirst for musical knowledge. guided by the ‘cut and paste’ school of thought, he then started working on his solo project. in the early days of his musical adventure monosylabikk spent hours listening to hip hop, drum’n’bass and punk rock, mixing the records with cutting-edge polish jazz samples. to create his compositions he sampled whatever he could get in his hands on from vinyl to mp3’s and tape recordings and by doing so he always built solid sound structures and harmonies with minimalist sensibilities. always looking outside of the box and never content to stick with one style, his early tracks are genre-bending works of art merging elements of funk and hip hop which gradually evolved into being even more experimental. this has resulted in several fruitful collaborations with artists such as vocalist bee (us) and mc coherent motion (us). in 2007 signed to KITTY-YO. "recently appeared on Kitty Yo's Class Of 2007 compilation, his production as Monosyllabik providing one of the collection's standout entries ('Morbid', a track featured here). In production terms Kaniecki 's guiding principle is one of cut and paste-style hip hop, but the sources he taps into could hardly fit in neatly with that sort of genre pigeonholing, despite occasional guest spots from rapper Coherent Motion. The clever jazz chop-ups of 'Et' start the album off with a feel that brings to mind Four Tet, while more impressive instrumental collage work crops up on the title track, which feels like a loosened up Avalanches mix, complete with slow, phasing beats and roughly cut easy listening orchestral passages. The atmospheric crackle and acoustic guitar reverberations of 'It'd End Up On Ladbroke Grove' will inevitably prompt DJ Shadow comparisons, but as is so often the case on this album, there are always off-kilter, incongruent elements interrupting the flow to stop you from getting too complacent. The same is true of the cinematic 'Ninety Nine Dot Nine' and the delightfully confusing Squarepusher-remixes-Krzysztof Komeda stylings of 'Sawyer'. Good stuff."
