In Asian countries every year about 2 million cats and dogs are bred, caught as strays or even are stolen from their owners for the fur trade. The animals are killed in the most cruel way only to use their fur. PLASE DON'T EVER BUY FUR - even if its just a rim! As long as people keep buying fur, this won't stop! Approximately 3.5 million fur-bearing animals are killed each year for their fur by trappers in the U.S. Another 2.7 million animals are raised on fur "farms." Ranch-raised foxes are kept in cages only 2.5 feet square (minks in cages 1-foot-by-3-feet), with up to four animals per cage. Animals can languish in traps for days. Up to 1 out of every 4 trapped animals escapes by chewing off his or her own feet, only to die later from blood loss, fever, gangrene, or predation.Every year, thousands of dogs, cats, raptors, and other so-called "trash" animals (including endangered species like the bald eagle) are crippled or killed by traps.To kill the animals without damaging their fur, trappers usually strangle, beat, or stomp them to death. Animals on fur farms may be gassed, electrocuted, poisoned with strychnine, or have their necks snapped. These methods are not 100 percent effective and some animals "wake up" while being skinned.
There are over 7,000 bears in bear farms in China who suffer extreme pain due to daily bile extractions. Many of these bears are kept in cages no bigger than a telephone box and often die from illnesses and infections from their open wounds. The majority of the 100 million pigs killed in the U.S. for their flesh each year spend their lives in cramped metal pens inside filthy sheds.
Pigs are highly intelligent and friendly animals who often go insane from the confinement and deprivation that they endure in factory farms. Their teeth are clipped without the use of painkillers to prevent them from biting each other out of boredom and frustration.
The hens spend their entire lives in tiny wire “battery” cages, which measure roughly 18 inches by 20 inches and hold five to 11 hens who each have a wingspan of 32 inches. Each hen has an area smaller than a sheet of notebook paper in which to stand and doesn’t have enough space to spread even one wing.
Foie gras literally means "fatty liver" in French. To produce it, young ducks or geese have over four pounds of corn mush forced down their throats through a long metal pipe each day for two to three weeks until they can barely move and are on the verge of organ rupture and death. For a 150 pound human, this would be equivalent to 60 pounds of food per day. The force-feeding process causes the ducks' livers to swell up to ten times their normal size, inducing a disease that veterinarians call "hepatic lipidosis." These fattened, diseased livers are sold as "foie gras.
Every year over 360 million animals are transported in the EU. The transport of livestock often takes several days and travels across Europe. Sheep from Great Britain, for instance, are brought through the Netherlands, France and Italy to Greece. A 60-hour journey. During the several day voyage the animals get neither water nor food. In order to be able to transport as many animals as possible at once, they are crammed into transporters that have up to three floors. Consequently the height of the compartments is so low that the animals can't even lift their heads. They are forced to stay in this position for several days. Broken legs, ulcerated wounds and even dead animals are a tolerated part of this routine. Most bullfights last for about 15 minutes, with a series of deliberately vicious stages. The bull is taunted and stabbed with a variety of spears, barbed spikes and daggers. These weapons are designed to inflict intense pain and cause blood loss to weaken the animal.After this period of suffering, the Matador finally kills the exhausted and dying bull. Many bulls die drowning in their own blood because the Matador's inaccuracy often pierces their lungs instead of the heart.Following this, a short dagger, or ‘puntilla', is used to sever its spinal cord at the neck before the bull is dragged out of the arena, sometimes still alive... Every year, tens of millions of animals are dissected, infected, injected, gassed, burned and blinded in hidden laboratories on college campuses and research facilities throughout the U.S. Still more animals are used to test the safety of cosmetics, household cleansers and other consumer products. These innocent primates, dogs, cats, rabbits, rodents and other animals are used against their will as research subjects in experiments and procedures that would be considered sadistically cruel were they not conducted in the name of science. |
