About Me |
|
Franana is all about passion and pleasure - intelligent, heartfelt songwriting, conveyed with sincere emotion, infectious enthusiasm and stunning musicality. This trio of bright young musicians came together in 2004 via the Newcastle University Folk Music Degree, and spent three years performing together and separately in various different ensembles throughout the North East. In 2007, they joined forces to create Franana: a band which performs beautiful, original songs alongside refreshingly new version of both traditional and contemporary material. Strongly influenced by lyricists such as Bob Dylan, Josh Ritter and Karine Polwart, Franana's music is strikingly honest, with the ability to stir the emotions just by 'telling it like it is'... Fran - vocals, song-writing, piano Fran's growing reputation as a songwriter stems from the idiosyncratic turns-of-phrase and unusual imagery in her lyrics, and she counts acclaimed songwriters such as Karine Polwart, Devon Sproule, Catherine Feeny and Lucy Wainwright Roche amongst fans of her work. Whether passionate and gutsy, or delicate and heart-wrenching, Fran's vocals brim with sympathy for the songs, always relishing her Yorkshire accent with pride. “There are songwriters whose stunning lyrics weave their messages through your brain. There are singers who practice their craft with such consummate skill and care that you ‘live’ their songs. Fran does both.” - Tim Carroll - www.folkwords.com Chris Meredith - guitar, fiddle, vocals Chris Meredith is an accomplished guitarist, and a compelling live performer. Equally talented on the fiddle, Chris excels at conveying his enjoyment of the music to the audience, impressing with his natural ability and relaxed stage banter. He recently supported one of his guitar heroes, John Doyle, in concert at The Sage Gateshead. Chris' playing is sensitive, driving, and toe-tappingly funky. Amy Thatcher - accordion, fiddle, piano Amy Thatcher is one of the most outstanding musicians residing in the North East today. A highly skilled performer and composer, Amy was a member of the "Fosbrook Education Trust", and has worked closely with the likes of Karen Tweed and Alistair Anderson. The masterful innovation of Amy's accordion, with its soaring suspensions and addictively groovy bass riffs, really brings the magic to Franana. Music:Member Since: 7/8/2007Band Members: Sounds Like: Nice things people have said about Franana... "...it’s really exciting to discover a songwriting talent as intelligent and insightful as Fran... who knows how to sing her own stories with such conviction and grace." - Karine Polwart *** *** *** "I love your music!" - Todd Cohen, Antony and the Johnsons *** *** *** "There’s a stark, poignant beauty and a wealth of emotion and maturity in Fran’s Yorkshire-accented singing. This talented upcoming trio, emerging from Newcastle’s vibrant folk scene, presents these fine songs in exquisitely sparse instrumental settings." - Debbie Koritsas, "Living Tradition Magazine" *** *** *** "Franana combines Fran’s exquisitely crafted lyrics, delivered in her deliciously undisguised Yorkshire dialect, with the shimmering accordion of Amy Thatcher and the sturdy guitar playing of Chris Meredith. Fran’s songs stand alone as lyrical works of art, and the musical augmentation provided by Thatcher and Meredith serve to tease out each weary or life affirming emotion even further. Franana’s unfussy arrangements allow Fran’s evocative voice plenty of room to swoop and soar against a backdrop of sparse beauty." - Mike Wilson, folking.com *** *** *** "Lovely songs. Really lovely." - Devon Sproule *** *** *** "Franana brings together Fran’s richly textured songs, sung with lyricism and commitment, backed by Amy’s luscious accordion playing, with great rhythm from Chris on guitar. The arrangements are refreshing and the material original. “Alexander” is Great! And so is Franana." - Sandra Kerr *** *** *** "[Franana] is going places – no doubt about it... sensitive and incisive musicianship… consistently compelling, beautiful, and delivered with an angst-filled edge that demands that you listen… simply stunning songs. […] They just leave you gagging for more." - Tim Carroll, folkwords.com *** *** *** "Franana... stole the night for me, they were incredible. The lead singer’s passion and natural Wakefield accent was perfect for the accompanying guitar, piano keyboard, and accordian. [...] In my opinion Franana will go very far indeed, they are definitely a group to watch." - Terry Ferdinand, bishopfm.com *** *** *** "Franana were great, it’s fantastic to see such talent being unleashed onto the "folk" scene via the Newcastle degree. Fran is a superb singer... her own songs show real promise, very emotional and with strong melodies. Fantastic musical accompaniment from Chris Meredith on guitar and virtuoso accordion from Amy Thatcher....beautifully understated and subtle. The talent just drips from them all." - Paul Arrowsmith, Kirkby Fleetham Folk Club *** *** *** Record Label: Unsigned Type of Label: None |
