| It's all about keeping the past alive. Weather it be the cars, the diners, or the open road there is a romance with Route 66. Before there was I-40 there was Route 66. U. S. Highway "Route" 66 was commissioned in 1926, the year U. S. numbered highways came into existence. It consisted of a 'collection" of two-lane concrete or asphalt paved roads extending from Chicago to Santa Monica, running through the states of Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. Route 66 is considered the "Mother Road" of American highways. The old "Main Street of America" was deactivated in 1984 and the U. S. 66 highway shields taken down, after being replaced by the modern interstate highway system. This was done so we could save 20 miutes of driving time. Many small towns, diners, gas stations, and motels suffered in the wake of the decommsion. Many falling pray to bankruptcy and eventual abandonment. The old highway is littered with the reminders of yesteryear. Route 66 is an American icon as much as the Statue of Liberty or Mount Rushmore. It marks an era in our nations history, that need not be forgotten.
