I'd like to meet:Wes Ferrell - Perhaps the best hitting pitcher of all time. He only played ten seasons of pro ball due to arm injuries, but he compiled six twenty-win seasons in that time. He retired at age 33 but imagine if his arm was completely healthy until he was 40? He was an all-star pitcher with a decent fastball and good curve and was considered a change-up specialist, but most interesting were his hitting statistics. His brother Rick Ferrell was a Hall of Fame catcher. Rick collected 28 home runs, a .281 career batting average, 1692 hits, 734 RBIs, 687 runs scored, and a .378 On Base Percentage. Wes, as a pitcher who played 1336 games less than Rick, collected 38 home runs, a .280 batting average, 329 hits, 208 RBIs, 175 runs scored, and a .351 On Base Percentage. Wes also owns the record for home runs in a season by a pitcher (9) and career (38). The year that he hit 9 home runs he also gave up 9 home runs as a pitcher. He won 193 games in ten seasons and is the only pitcher to record at least 20 wins in his first four seasons. Those who are real fans of the game will recognize him as an all-time great. He is a true Hall of Famer. |
