About Me |
|
| Candy Davis has been around for a long time in various iterations. My mother says I wrote my first song at the age of six--and she still has a copy of it somewhere. I know that I've had an interest in music for as long as I can remember. I was four when my mom and dad bought a spinet piano, and I was fascinated with it, picking out tunes on it for years before I ever had lessons (from ages eight to twelve). To my delight, I discovered harmony when I was ten, while singing in a youth choir in church. All the way through school, I was in various choruses and did a little acting on stage as well. So my early background was steeped in classical music.I was a hippie chick in college. No, I didn't experiment with drugs. I was one of those granola-head back-to-the-landers, and I still am. Around about the age of 20, I taught myself guitar, watching other people's fingers and imitating them. The closest thing to lessons I had was watching Laura Weber's Folk Guitar show for a time on PBS. Couldn't afford the course, so I copied down stuff as quickly as I could and practiced in front of the TV to get some different picking styles down.I also played around a little with the fipple flute (pennywhistle) from time to time and was in the Southern Singers (a '70s swing choir). It taught me a little more about being comfortable on stage, and it was there that I had my first encounter with a 12-string guitar. A friend of mine lent it to me--he said he couldn't get used to it. After borrowing it for two years and eventually getting one of my own, there was no going back--I was hooked. I've never really played the 6-string since! In the mid-70s, I wrote the first song I still perform today, "My River Town." During this time, I also co-wrote many songs with my friend Joshua Tree, a poet, author, and jack of many trades. His poetry definitely influenced my own style of writing. Tragically, he passed away 10 years ago, but his spirit lives on in the many songs of ours.During the '80s, I was having kids, and my music took a long hiatus, except for leading Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts in singing funny songs. But in the '90s, my Muse re-emerged, and I began writing by myself once again. I'm happy to be back, because music is one of the things I enjoy doing more than most anything else, except for hiking in the woods and sailing on our local lakes. My songs reflect my love of nature, environmental activism, and my love of telling stories. And I'm not above writing some wickedly funny songs as well!Today I play out solo sometimes, but also am part of the Parsley & Sagebrush Band--if you think you've seen my face on another Myspace, you're right!I hope you all enjoy the sample of songs I'm sharing with you on my Myspace site.
