Sing, and the hills will answer; Sigh, it is lost on the air; The echoes bound to a joyful sound, but shrink from voicing care. _______________________________________________ The mood of these verses seems to be one of sad resignation. The idea that the earth (and by extension mankind) has to "borrow" its happy feelings coupled wth the idea that we each experience our sorrows alone evokes a kind of gentle sadness, to me. There also seems to be the implication that no one wants to hear our sorrows ("echoes bound to a joyful sound, but shrink from voicing care") We share our happiness with the world, but our sighs, sorrows, and cares are our burdens alone to bear. |
