| check out past dj mixes here dj mixes/AAbout three years ago House music got cool again; a kind cool that made clubs ‘jack’ like they did in the stories of the past. The kind of cool that made things fun again, the kind of cool that was old and new all at once, a cool that made sense to the ‘heads’ and the ‘bods’, a cool that reached people. A new wave of guys came from strange places with good ideas. They knew what music needed to make it good again. They knew what to do. Slater Hogan is one of those guys.Slater Hogan, hailing from Indianapolis has created a sound which is very much his home, yet DJ’s and dancers around the world are all moving to his beat. Nestled between Detroit and Chicago, Indianpolis has never been know as house music central, but with a strong jazz movement since the 1930’s and a wave of contemporary hip-hop producers the scene was ripe for a little social experiment. Slater collaborated with John Larner and played music historian and dance floor scientist to mould the old and new sounds of ‘Indy’, slip in some minimal Detroit techno, whilst smothering it with a Chi-town groove to create a sound that has left the house world speechless. A sound that had Mark Farina and Derrick Carter asking for seconds.Slater Hogan and John Larner, have used their own musical geography to create a rare and intelligent sound. With swing, jazz, hip-hop, techno, classic house and French disco all creeping into the mix, this recipe has seen them serve up numerous releases in the last three years, many becoming modern classics. “Caught Up” on Hip Therapist reached the decks of Pete Tong on BBC Radio One. “NOLA House” on Aroma made DJ’s rejoice and their girlfriends dance. The Hoosier Daddy EP ..school, was an underground classic that was Daft Punk, Louis Armstrong and the Music Box all in one. The Freaky World Bubble ep on Lowdown and “A.D.D Acid” on Mouthful were played in all corners of the globe. Slater and John struck on a formula here, and their music has graced the world’s best deep house labels. Icon, Odds and Ends, Nightshift, Tango and Headset have all joined the party; many more will follow.Muzique Boutique Recordings, was started in 2003 with John and Shawn Collins as a vehicle to present their sound to the world. With acclaimed releases from Hakan Lidbo, Lance Desardi, The Littlemen and Stacy Kidd the label is taking the globe by storm. Muzique Boutique releases have found their way into the record boxes of Mark Farina, Inland Knights, Heather and DJ Sneak. Packaged in a colourful, kitsch sleeve picturing a martini glass, it’s an ironic nod to the swing and jazz history of the area. Slater also founded Herbal Essence Records in 2003 with Shawn Collins as an outlet for his hip-hop musical self. Producing a string of hip-hop and R&B bootlegs with pals Guided Methods that brought a little fun back to the discotheque. The label and productions have seen Slater and John play shows in Europe, United Kingdom, Scandinavia, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand. Their live act is bouncy and fun, brimming with the sounds of Chicago, St Louis and Indianpolis. Using four decks at times, a Slater Hogan and John Larner DJ set is as much a musical document, as it is unadulterated disco-funk. They are also regular fixtures on the domestic circuit in the U.S.A and play shows in all corners of the continent. The rigorous touring schedule aside, Slater and John still have time to host a regular Thursday night party at The Vapour Lounge’,in Indianpolis. Entitled “Keep It Deep”, it’s a chance to push the envelope and bring the world back to the local DJ’s and musicians in the area. Live keyboard and jazz sounds are in the mix, along with Slater and John’s trademark grooves to result in a mixture of swing, chi-town bump, French disco and straight up jazz delivered to the ‘Indy’ faithful. The first thursday of each month sees the boys bring in some of the hottest talent in the world. past dj's include, stacy kidd, kaskade, dj sneak, chuck daniels, dj heather, and diz.Their live act is bouncy and fun, brimming with the sounds of Chicago, St Louis and Indianapolis. You will not have heard anything like these Midwest jazz-heads before | |
