His craving for seamless, continuous mixes lead him into the DJ world in 2003. Patrick's love of electronic music began with the peak of the 80s break dancing scene. His tastes in EDM have evolved from 80s electrofunk/techno/pop to his love for trance, tribal & progressive house. Some of Patrick's favorite gear for production is his Roland MC-505 with VirtualDJ software mixer. When it comes to building his DJ sets, "I take an un-godly number of hours looking for new music. I'm very picky about the tracks and still can't really put a name to my style - I like lush, dark, stylish, and dirty textures." When the DJ comes out, he rocks the house with his Gemini MPX-30 & CFX-50 Dual CD decks coupled with a Gemini PMX-05 mixer and PVDJ Grabber Sampler. He sizzles his mixes by cranking out simultaneous effects from both Gemini's on-board effects banks. Patrick explains why he can't live without his CD decks and the effects that are possible: "My favorite effect is called 'Trance' which slices up the sound on the mixer. I start the process on the CD deck where I'll look for a relatively calm part of the song with no drums and slowly feed in the maximum echo effect, which transforms the audio into a lush and constant 'humm'. Once that goes active, I throw the track into reverse for about 10 seconds at a time then back forward - then I do that repeatedly. It smoothes out the canvas even more and basically suspends the track, and now I have it in the palm of my hand. So at this point the CD is in reverse and in echo. Now it's ready to be sliced by the 'Trance' effect on the mixer...and voila, you end up with 3 simultaneous effects rocking the party. I know overuse this technique, but it sounds bad ass, and I LOVE it." In 2005, he started broadcasting live on internet radio & KROFT Radio was born (formerly MyTranceSpace.com). He started the station to fill his need for continuous trance/tribal sets 24/7. The station mostly broadcasts his sets, with occasional guest DJ mixes. He broadcasts live on the station 2-3 times per week. Patrick's latest venture is his live DJ mix webcam. "It's a great complement to my radio station right now because the listeners get to actually see me mix a live set and tweak the tracks real-time. It's amazing, although simple...just me sitting in the studio behind the decks." He makes live cam appearances weekly when he finds free time. |
