| Since I was a little buddy, motorcycles have played a huge role in my life. The first bike I jumped on was a RM50, on my fifth birthday, and I promptly broke my arm. That only fueled my passion for bikes. Most of my childhood was spent working on a gritty shop floor, sweeping metal chips and wrenching bikes. When I wasn’t at the shop working side-by-side with my dad, I was out skating, surfing, and riding motor cross. My life was about bikes and thrills. The shop I used to run around in grew to become Performance Machine, which has been an industry leader in after market motorcycle parts for decades. In-between shop duties at PM, I started road racing motorcycles at 19 and quickly became addicted with the power and discipline needed to win.Racing was, and still is, my passion. I took to it like a fish to water. By 1998 I had won my first AMA national and went on to win five more races and the AMA National Championship that same year. Shortly after, I was racing 600 super sport bikes in England, Spain and Scotland for the Factory Honda Team. I had dozens of sponsors and was living the motorcycle racers dream. I retired in 2002 after winning my last AMA National at Fontana. I left the sport with a bang! I owned the 250 GP track records at Daytona, Sears Point, Willow Springs and Colorado and shared the crown for the most AMA 250 GP wins with Eddie Lawson.After more than 30 broken bones over a short period of time, I realized my competitive drive was going to get the best of me. I figured if I could apply the same drive and determination elsewhere I could be successful in something that wouldn’t rip my arms off. Since I’d been designing much of the PM product line while I was racing, and I’d always wanted to build bikes around the product, it was a natural progression to head up PM’s Design and R&D Department.Since transitioning into “retirement” I’ve never worked harder. My design ideology combines design and fabrication with a deviant manner. Since applying the same worth ethic for racing to my design and R&D role at PM, we’ve received two V-Twin Wheel Design of the Year Awards, and one V-Twin Control Design of the Year Award.Taking the same design philosophy from the PM parts lines, I started designing and building bikes with a crack-shot team of PM builders. The bikes we’ve been producing at PM are performance-driven with parts made for the track, and a healthy nod to the industry’s heritage – V-twin power and styling with sport bike performance.The bikes have turned some heads and made some waves throughout the industry. In 2004, legendary designer Chip Foose bestrode his Award of Design Excellence upon me. And the motley crew at the Discovery Channel’s Ultimate Biker Build Off thought well enough of me to throw the 2005 Rookie of the Year Award my way.I haven’t stopped moving since that first ride on my fifth birthday, and with the recent creation of Roland Sands Designs, I intend to keep riding this epic wave.
