A group with unusual name “Cinnamon Box” is going to make headlines by appearance of its double single. The most peaceful revolution in the world of electro-music for intellectuals took place right on the day, when music of “Cinnamon Box” was born. It is calm and melancholy like an autumn rain. It is painted blue and grey of decadence. With a flavor of vinyl retro. It’s difficult to imagine. It has to be heard. “Cinnamon Box”, a box with cinnamon, if you translate it from English. When abbreviated – “CinBox”. Someone can hear “Sin Box”, a box of sins. Well, it may be so. The band has the only sin, and it is their perfect musical gift. It can not be in another way, when professional people who are in love with music gather together. So, who are they, these melancholy personages of musical decadence? Lev Koppelkin (aka Update Project) – he is a musician with a academic education, who once had changed the overexposed piano for the keys of the synthesizer, and the music stand for the flashing monitor of the computer. Electro-music became his destiny. He left behind two musical schools, piano and classical guitar classes, and an exclusive Diploma of the Historic-Theoretic and Composers Faculty of the Moscow Gnesins Music Academy. The Diploma was exclusive, for there were only seven owners of the Diplomas of such kind in Russia in far 2003. A contract with a world known British record label Deep Blue had been waiting for him then. Now Lev is collaborating with the company in creating his first solo album with chillout/ambient music. Lev’s being a success is also demonstrated by the opinion of the participants of the legendary British project Solar Stone. They considered his music to be the greatest discovery of the last decade: «Our Ambient discovery of the decade has to be this Russian genius, Update Project (с) Solar Stone (www.solarstone.co.uk ) » Irina Lvova – her destiny is cello. It is a stirring, womanly instrument with a low and beautiful voice. The cello sounds deeply and amazingly. When her sound joins vocal, they become inseparable. All this is music. Cello was with her in musical school and now its voice sounds in Gnesins College, owing to her skillful hands. Now Irina is in the cello rock quartet «VesperCellos». Collaboration with different musical collectives, from ethno to metal, has given her great experience. Music by Irina is light and wistful like a melancholy of early Sping, like the last sunshine of the late autumn. Katya Lapina – the vocalist of the group « Cinnamon Box », once, a long time ago, she had tried to deceive the Providence and had become a financier, having suppressed her desire to sing. Nevertheless, the path of the destiny had brought her into the jazz college. And Katya appeared on the stage. Her voice merges with charming sounds of the cello. It is the same musical instrument like she is. What are the songs about? That’s not so important. Texts in English are created in order not to force the listener try to understand the meaning of the words, but just enjoy the sound of the voice. He is supposed to feel, to breathe the music. And that’s all. Three absolutely different musicians have united their professionalism and love to music. So the group « Cinnamon Box » was born. Three absolutely different sounds: electronic music by Lev, classics of the cello of Irina and Katy’s jazz-vocal have made the impossible things. How to characterize the musical style of the group « Cinnamon Box »? There are many names: chillout/ambient sounding, down tempo, trip-hop and lounge. But what are all the names for? One does not need to talk about music. Music needs to be listened to. It has melancholy of an old gramophone and loneliness of leafage sopped in the rain, hiding shadows of eyelashes, fragile notes of melancholy, fading delicacy of glamour and nostalgia of the remote past. Music of “Cinnamon Box” lives its own life. And the life goes on, while red-haired brute is playing cello, while the voice flows stridently and ruefully and while the blue monitor is shimmering. Music is heard. |
