| …“Nel 2000, una forte passione per il funk e un impatto travolgente ad un concerto dei Jamiroquai a Milano insinuano in Marco Mengoni il sogno, anche se non ancora ben delineato, di avviare un nuovo progetto che prevedesse un ampio organico di musicisti e che esplorasse un altrettanto ampio ventaglio di generi musicali.”… Il primo nucleo costitutivo della band si forma a Varese nel novembre 2000, ma è solo da fine gennaio 2001 che viene raggiunto un organico tale da dar ufficialmente vita alla famiglia Hotelpry. Tutti i componenti della band provengono da realtà musicali, antecedenti e parallele a questo progetto, completamente diverse tra loro (si va dalla musica classica all’heavy metal, dal rap al jazz) e diverse dal genere musicale che ora li accomuna. A questo scopo furono fondamentali le intere ore trascorse ad improvvisare... Dopo pochi mesi il gruppo trova la convinzione e la mentalità giuste e si dedica alla composizione. Gli Hotelpry hanno formato la propria sonorità, durante una breve fase iniziale come “cover band”, attraverso lo studio di un repertorio variegato di generi, ispirandosi ad autori che spaziavano da Lenny Kravitz ai Led Zeppelin o da Bob Marley ai Jamiroquai, fino poi a giungere ad uno stile funk ibrido e tutto personale. Forse è proprio questo il motivo che rende gli Hotelpry una band così interessante, nonostante il genere musicale che propongono non sia tra i più popolari in Italia. La musica composta è dinamica, ricca, di facile ascolto e corredata di testi poetici o brillanti, con la scelta della lingua inglese. E’ stato Alessio a mettere tutti d’accordo su “ HOTELPRY ”, dopo il rapido succedersi, in precedenza, di alcuni altri nomi che non risultarono mai abbastanza convincenti. Hotelpry, ovvero “l’albergo che scruta”, è inteso come un’entità viva, un crocevia di migliaia di singole individualità umane che provengono ognuna dal proprio mondo e che per poco tempo portano nell’albergo le proprie storie, le proprie passioni, i propri sentimenti; e l’albergo, silenziosamente, le osserva nell’intimità delle proprie camere e impara a conoscerle. Riscuotono numerosi consensi, nonostante il loro genere musicale, poco di moda, e la scelta di usare principalmente la lingua inglese. Col passare del tempo hanno continuato a migliorarsi, a produrre nuova musica e a collezionare ottime esperienze che li rivelano come realtà musicale affermata anche oltre i confini della “provincia”.
___________________________________________________________ ..."During the whole year 2000 a very strong passion for the funk, a sweeping impact at a Jamiroquai’s concert in Milan and the desire to surpass former experiences of “heavy” music insert in Marco Mengoni the biting dream, even if not shaped yet, to start a new project that provides for a wide staff of musicians and that probes an equally wide series of musical genres. In January 2001, Alessio and Mauro complete the staff giving to the group a larger artistic expression. The idea has taken on a definite shape, now its history can start. Hotelpry is engaged during the following months in playing covers (i.e.: Jamiroquai, Incubus, Lenny Kravitz, Led Zeppelin, Bob Marley), exploring a broad horizon of music genres. Meanwhile they are playing pure improvisation for hours, just to search new sonority and improve it; the band focalises on a hybrid genre of funky and acid-jazz, polluted by the rock bases of some members. In this period of starting experimentation, the introduction of other elements as Dj's and trumpets is tried, without any good result.Choosing the name for a group is always difficult but, after some tries, the band finds an agreement on Alessio’s idea, “Hotelpry”. “The Hotel that pries” is meant as a living entity, as a cross-road for thousands of single human individualities that come each one from its own world and that, for a few time, bring into the Hotel their own stories, their own passions, their own feelings; and the Hotel, silently, learns to know them.
