* Face the fact that there is no comfortable way to hold a ukulele. (Wearing a bikini might help, though - skin is grippier than clothing.) * Try strumming up and down with one finger - nail, then pad. Strumming doesn't really work if you're doing it quietly to avoid waking the neighbors. Go all-out and it will start to sound right. * The ukulele isn't there to play the song; it's there to provide backup for your singing. * Start with an easy song. If it's not easy enough, find something easier. * Your easy song should be one you know by heart; if you can't confidently sing the melody, find a song you know better. * The point of casual uke playing is to have fun with a simple instrument. Advice from one message board on technique: "If you're having fun, you're doing it right." * For your convenience ~ you can find a ukulele chord chart in my pictures.
