About Me |
| As President, I did not infringe upon the policy making powers that I felt the Constitution gave Congress. But the determination of foreign policy became preponderantly a Presidential concern. When the French Revolution led to a major war between France and England, I refused to accept entirely the recommendations of either my Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson, who was pro-French, or my Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton, who was pro-British. Rather, I insisted upon a neutral course until the United States could grow stronger. To my disappointment, two parties were developing by the end of my first term. Wearied of politics, feeling old, I retired at the end of my second. In my Farewell Address, I urged my countrymen to forswear excessive party spirit and geographical distinctions. In foreign affairs, I warned against long-term alliances. | |
My Interests |
| It should be the highest ambition of every American to extend his views beyond himself and to bear in mind that his conduct will not only affect himself, his country, and his immediate posterity; but that its influence may be co-extensive with the world, and stamp political happiness or misery on ages yet unborn. | |
I'd like to meet:I wish to associate myself with men of good quality as I esteem my own reputation. It is better be alone than in bad company. |
Music:Francis Hopkinson was our first American composer and my dear friend. He dedicated seven harpsichord pieces to me. |
Books:A how-to book on the manners of the English gentleman. Etiquette is so particularly important at the upper levels of society. |
Heroes:Thomas, the 6th Lord of Fairfax. In 1748, he made my acquaintance when I was but a youth of 16. He was impressed by my energy and talents and employed me to survey his lands lying west of the Blue Ridge. Though a frank and avowed Loyalist, he was never insulted or molested by the Whigs. His barony and immense domain, consisting of 5,282,000 acres, descended to his only surviving brother, Robert, 7th lord, who died at Leeds Castle, England, in 1791; but, as the domain was in possession of Lord Thomas during the Revolution, it was confiscated.Which Star Wars Character Are You?
