About Me |

WELCOME FRIEND! My name is Carol Joly or "CJ" (if you prefer). I have my "Lotusdream" Page on Myspace, and now I have this "Minneapolis" Page. I hope you enjoy them both. This is pretty much a FAN PAGE. I LOVE Minneapolis and am so proud that I was born here and live here that I needed to make this Minneapolis Page. I live in the Whittier neighborhood, in South Minneapolis, which is in my opinion the best location to live here in Minneapolis. It's between Uptown and the Lyndale/Lake neighborhoods, the Wedge neighborhood and Downtown Minneapolis. All I need in Life is very close to where I live. I don't have a car for many reasons. I can ride my Marin Bolinas Ridge Mountain Bike pretty much anywhere, everything is so close to where I live. Or I can walk, ride a Metro Transit Bus or take a Taxi. Minneapolis is a City that feels like a Town. I LOVE it here! Minneapolis and the Mississippi River Minneapolis, Minnesota USA officialy came to be June 5th, 1878. Minnesota USA officialy came to be a bit earlier, May 11, 1858. Minneapolis (pronounced /ˌmɪni,,æpʌlɪs/) is the largest city in the U.S. state of Minnesota and is the county seat of Hennepin County. The city lies on both banks of the Mississippi River, just north of the river's confluence with the Minnesota River, and adjoins Saint Paul, the state's capital. Known as the Twin Cities, these two cities form the core of Minneapolis-St. Paul, the fifteenth largest metropolitan area in the United States, with about 3.5 million residents. The U.S. Census Bureau estimated the population of the city of Minneapolis at 372,811 people in 2005. The Metropolitan Council estimate for 2006 was 387,970. Abundantly rich in water, the city has twenty lakes and wetlands, the Mississippi riverfront, creeks and waterfalls, many connected by parkways in the Chain of Lakes and the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway. Minneapolis was once the world's flour milling capital and a hub for timber, and today is the primary business center between Chicago, Illinois, and Seattle, Washington. America's most literate city, Minneapolis builds cultural organizations that draw creative people and audiences to Minneapolis for theater, visual art, writing and music. The community's diverse population has a long tradition of charitable support through progressive public social programs and through private and corporate philanthropy. The name Minneapolis is attributed to the city's first schoolmaster, who combined mni, the Dakota word for water, and polis, the Greek word for city. Minneapolis is nicknamed the City of Lakes. |

Restlessly peripatetic, incessantly improvisational and always brilliant - that ain't no forehead, that's an eight head! Eight Head is percussionist Marc Anderson, bassist Jim Anton, drummer J.T. Bates, and guitarist Dean Magraw; purveyors of a remarkably fresh, jaw droppingly sophisticated and infectiously groovy vibe. They bring vast experience and variety onto the stage, making effortless transitions from soft textures and thoughtful improvisation to infectious polyrhythms and driving funk. I Love these guys so much! I have felt out of body with their music and have been moved to tears.. they also ROCK IT OUT! And you gotta DANCE! Amazing amazing group! PETER OSTROUSHKO! www.peterostroushko.com Born August 1953 is a American violinist and mandolinist of Ukrainian ancestry, growing up in Northeast Minneapolis. MICK LaBRIOLA Mick LaBriola is world music percussionist and educator who has performed with a wide range of global musicians and dancers. He founded the Carribean band The Maroons and co-founded the Voices of Sepharad, featuring Judeo-Spanish music. He is roster artist with the Minnesota State Arts Board, and does artist residencies in schools with Young Audiences of Minnesota and Compas. LaBriola has produced "Prakritis Kiss" by Mojo Roots - a blues, R&B and Reggae trio and "Allwhere" with the jazz-poetry group Ancestor Energy. His new CD is a very personal project dedicated to his young son who passed on June 5th 2002, called: "Songs for Diego ~ I'm Missing You." www.micklabriola.com www.myspace.com/micklabriola<> Mick LaBriola CD release of "Songs for Diego ~ I'm Missing You" concert at the Cedar. www.micklabriola.com www.myspace.com/micklabriola SONGS FOR DIEGO Born September 23rd 1995 Passed on June 5th 2002 "Songs for Diego is a wondrous and captivating tribute to a beautiful child. This cd is your hearts prayer in words and music. An evocative and emotional journey that touches ones spirit. The music is cathartic and transformative , a feast of love , peace and passion. Your inner reflections and heartfelt creative energy are a testament to the authentic and eternal connection you share with your son. Like a gentle morning mist and the dawn of a newborn sun - Songs for Diego - awakens one to a new day where heart centered communication and love for humanity reign supreme." ~Michael Teal "Known in Twin Cities reggae and world-music circles for his percussion skills, Mick LaBriola reinvents himself as a guitar-wielding singer/songwriter on the album “Songs for Diego, I’m Missing You.” Inspired by the crushing loss of his 6-year-old son in a 2002 car accident, the CD is heartfelt, loving and occasionally spooky, laced with between-song snippets of Diego’s voice, then augmented beautifully with violin and percussion parts, even some oud playing. There are several impressive confessional folk numbers, including the gripping title track, and one slice of cool reggae dub, “Live In You.”" ~Tom Surowitz Mojo Roots "Prakriti's Kiss" © 2004 Mojo Roots This dynamic Trio were created to provide a musical alternative to the home grown, agriculturally provocative, party-down atmosphere of the Minnesota State Fair. By blending the familiar musical genres of each player, MOJO ROOTS coagulated a simmering concoction of R & B, Blues, Reggae, Ska, Second Line, & International Rhythms/Grooves. The result was an overwhelming Audience responce that culminated into the groups 1st CD project, "Prakritis Kiss". The song list contains familar Cover Tunes, however the treatment is always MOJO ROOTS or as we like to say; MOJOFIED! ..Ancestor Energy "Allwhere" © 2004 Ancestor Energy "The musical compositions are brilliant: Carei Thomas has scaled the heights and brings back proof. The gathered musical talent speak back to the composition with stunning performances. Louis Alemayehu's poetry and voice and voice work is possessed, spirited: functioning precisely the way it should. Leading us through those labyrinths of discovery. Guiding us. Haunting us. These are favorites lined up waiting for you here. But be soul prepared. This is true flight. Destination: Allwhere." ~Alex Pate "Ancestor Energy. Dynamics is the operative word here....Ancestor Energy offers a fairly unique amalgam of bristling post-Coltrane jazz, taut social commentary, potent poetics, striking melodies, and freewheeling yet insistent rhythms. Few groups have combined verse and jazz music with more art and less artificiality. Ancestor Energy joins a very short list of underground heroes, including the Last Poets, Jayne Cortez, Archie Shepp and the AACM's Shadow Vignettes big band. Louis Alemayehu writes stirring, machete sharp poems, and he really can emote - Alemayehu is that rarity among men, a great reader. Carei Thomas and the rest of the accompanying musicians match the funky poet's fire with scripted and spur-of-the-moment improvisation sparks of their own. And the whole is definitely greater that the sum of it's parts. Ancestor Energy is truly an experience, a no-drugs-necessary head trip." ~Tom Surowitz Twin Cities Jazz journalist KOERNER, RAY and GLOVER!!! Began playing in early 1960. They were never much concerned with making it BIG though. Opportunities came and just as quickly went. They were fixtures on the West Bank/Minneapolis scene, as comfortable playing in bars as at the Guthrie Theater. Sadly Dave "Snaker" Ray passed on Thanksgiving 2002. JOHN KOERNER Traditional American folk and country blues musician, rhythmic guitarist, song-crafter, singer, stargazer and humorist. Legend Blues Harpist TONY GLOVER MICHAEL MONROE His unique creation of music leaves his audiences mesmerized as he blends his rich vocals, guitar, bamboo and glass flutes, combining musical styles of acoustic folk and jazzy reggae. Michael's original music and compelling energy bring a powerful style that is as much fun as it is innovative,,, music and technology working together powered by creativity... and he recycles his music on stage with his "live" layering/looping technique.
