Welcome to Evolve Festival 2008! We are a new and exciting festival for South Dorset, based in Weymouth. The festival will be at LODMOOR COUNTRY PARK on the 25th & 26th July 2008. We're primarily organised by young local musicians who want to spread the word about music in the area. We're aiming for a relaxed, sunny event that everyone will enjoy - from kids to adults and everyone in between. We've got artists playing and also plenty of workshops to keep everyone busy and having fun. Our website is being continually updated, so please keep checking back for the very latest news! WE ARE CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR STEWARDS....IF YOU WISH TO APPLY PLEASE VISIT OUR WEBSITE - EVOLVEFESTIVAL.CO.UK *************ARTIST APPLICATIONS********* **Please see section at the end of Heroes** Our current line up includes: With Miranda SykesShow of Hands are undoubtedly the UK's most successful Acoustic Roots duo. With a contemporary twist on traditional music, Steve's songwriting, Phil's instrumental genius and now Miranda Sykes' immense talent, they are a force to be reckoned with. Lou Rhodes is a singer-songwriter, who left her electronic beginnings in Lamb for the more intimate world of folk, where she has amassed a huge following with her incredible voice and compelling, emotive songs. Northern duo, Megson, have been making a splash in the folk/roots scene with their captivating songs, poignant lyrics, beautiful harmonies and impeccable musicianship. This vibrant four-piece is one of the best young folk acts around. Drawing on influences from across Europe, they perform all kinds of songs, dances and tunes with vitality and style. A band that gets everyone dancing through their infectious blend of celtic, gypsy, latino, dance, punk, reggae and traditional folk. TIM VAN EYKEN Since winning the BBC's Young Folk Awards in 1998, Tim has toured the world with Waterson:Carthy, honing his skill as an instrumentalist and a performer. Today, he is one of the most assured and captivating singers around. TOM DALE Tom Dale is a prolific song-smith, with a street-worn command of rack harmonica, finger-style, lap and slide guitar. An experienced and unique performer LANDERMASON Musicians Fiona Lander and Paul Mason collectively known as Landermason started writing and recording songs together in 2000. Fiona (vocals, piano, whistles and saxophones) and Paul (vocals and guitars) have developed a unique sound displaying their undoubted talents as musicians. 5TH QUARTER Since 2005 5th Quarter have entertained audiences with their original mix of traditional and contempory folk, spiced with more than a hint of Jazz and Blues. With strong vocals and rich instrumentation fans are wowed by their gentle ballads, firey fiddle tunes and stunning improvisations-folk music like you never heard before. DANIEL HONEY Daniel Honey is a singer-songwriter who draws inspiration from a range of styles such as folk, blues, and indie. Whether performing solo or with his backing band, Daniel's smooth voice and emotive songs are guaranteed to please any audience. NICK WYKE & BECKI DRISCOLL Nick Wyke is an experienced performer and workshop leader whose skills have been tried and tested at major folk festivals including Sidmouth International Festival. Becki Driscoll started playing folk and traditional music in her home town of Bridport with ceilidh band Sundance, She composes many of the new tunes for the duo, drawing on her interest and knowledge of traditional English and Western European music for inspiration. REG MEUROSS & JACKIE OATES Reg's gently-rocking, melodic country-tinged songs seem to plant themselves in the mind as if by celestial USB. Reg has created his own form of ‘Britannicana’, finding inspiration in fragments of history and real lives as well as the usual subjects of love and loss. Both on CD and live, he keeps the finest company, with the likes of Who keyboard player RABBITT BUNDRICK, MIRANDA SYKES, PHIL BEER and at Evolve the wonderful viola/fiddle player and singer JACKIE. She is a rising star who was BBC Young Folk award finalist in 2008 has since had a MOJO top 10 album, numerous gigs and festival appearances, tours with Show of Hands and a great new eponymous CD (produced by Phil) just released. MAWKIN:CAUSLEY Those wicked Essex rascals, Mawkin, have joined forces with the honey-voiced Jim Causley to form one hell of a boy band! One of the best instrumental outfits to emerge in recent years, Mawkin have a string of festival and concert appearances under their belt. Bringing Jim Causley on board is a masterstroke, as his gorgeous baritone voice is the perfect foil for their cleverly textured tunes and energetic performances. A unique collaboration not to be missed. NOT MADE IN CHINA Not Made in China are young acoustic / folk / pop puck duo Tiff Wheaton-Green and Gavin Blackwell. They blend subtle and haunting vocals with confident and sparse playing. They are currently being picked up by festivals over the summer, and gaining rave reviews whenever they play. Inspired by singer songwriters including Kirsty MacCool and and Billy Bragg, Not Made in China have been described as “really amazing” and “truly charming“. BOB KIRKPATRICK Bob Kirkpatricks songs are a fine addition to the contemporary acoustic scene, with real melodies, real words and real meaning! and he performs them with style.Bob runs the Sunray Folk Club check his website for more details. STATE OF UNDRESS State of Undress have had a wonderful year, the culmination of which was their Christmas Concert at the delightful Tivoli Theatre in Wimborne. This was a resounding success and showed that the band can really perform on the bigger stage. More shows of this stature are planned for next year. They've also played some great festivals including the Americana International in Nottingham; The Beggars Fair; The Great Dorset Steam Fair and the Isle of Wight Folk and Blues Festival. More festival appearances are planned for 2008. JAMES FINDLAY James Findlay is a locally based traditional singer, fiddler and guitarist. Coming from a musical background, he is influenced by all genres of music. However, his love lies in traditional English folk music and ballads, his style being inspired by Nic Jones, and singers such as The Watersons. PRONGHORN “Purveyors of the finest Cowpunk” – With blisteringly their fast, rabble-rousing tunes, Pronghorn are set to as always whip the crowd into a frenzy of hoedown bliss. Accept no imitations – this band are one of the Souths finest exports, regularly playing festivals over Europe. THINKER Formed at the end of 2007, Thinker are a relatively new band from the south. The 3 piece made up of violin, guitar, bass and voice combine traditional influences with modern sentiments, to create music which is energetic, melodic and will make you think. . Already gathering a reputation for their live performances, Thinker have a belief in good songwriting which makes for a great live spectacle. ODDUR Oddur joined Lamb in 2001, and remained a principle member of the group until they disbanded in 2004. It was the spark he needed to actualize his own musical expression. Since then, Oddur has worked as a session player and touring guitarist for Nemo Jones, Alison David, Papertwin, breakbeat producer Adam Freeland, and both Barlow and Lamb vocalist Lou Rhodes.Oddur’s guitar work covers a wide emotion spectrum, from gentle balladry to fervent, jump-up riffing. Influenced by the playing of John Renbourn and Scottish folkies Bert Jansch and John Martin, Oddur conjures up luminous melodies and vivid imagery with a patient playing style. His Fylde Alchemist emits an exquisite tone that resonates behind a light and soothing singing voice. His lyrics forego allegory in favor of simplicity. TAM LIN Al is a young multi talented musician, composer and song writer, who is also classically trained on piano and trombone. When not playing in Tam Lin he performs in orchestras, choirs and for various shows. Neill plays fiddle, guitar and bouzouki for Tam Lin. Neill started his musical career as a guitarist in goth and punk and metal bands gigging mainly round the south of England.
