About Me |
|
| Herb Alpert is rightly considered a legend in the music business. With partner Jerry Moss, he founded A&M Records in 1962, creating one of the most successful independent record companies of all time before its sale to PolyGram Records, now part of the Universal Music Group, in 1989. The phenomenon that started it all was his hit group, Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass. With that outfit and as a solo artist, Alpert has sold more than 75 million records. He has earned seven GRAMMYs®, and has scored 14 platinum and 15 gold records in all.
TJB’s—and A&M’s—1962 first single, “The Lonely Bull,” made the Billboard Top 10 and helped keep the album of the same name in the charts for three years running. In 1966, when the TJB craze was unstoppable, he achieved the since-unmatched feats of simultaneously having four albums in the Billboard Top 10--and five in the Top 20. In all, he’s had five singles reach the top spot on the Billboard Pop chart. Herb Alpert’s accomplishments extend beyond the art and business of music. He has made a name for himself as an abstract expressionist painter whose work has been shown in museums and galleries around the world, and his sculptures are becoming equally acclaimed. On Broadway, Alpert has produced celebrated works including Jelly’s Last Jam, Arthur Miller’s Broken Glass, and Tony Kushner’s Pulitzer Prize-winning smash Angels In America. Finally, Alpert’s ongoing philanthropy has garnered a host of awards, and for almost two decades, The Herb Alpert Foundation has underwritten funding in the areas of the arts, the environment, and education. The Foundation recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of the internationally renowned Alpert Award in the Arts, granted to emerging mid-career artists in five disciplines annually, many of whom have gone on to be Pulitzer Prize winners and MacArthur Fellows. And the Foundation is providing major support for the New Vision Foundation’s pioneering Herb Alpert Educational Village, breaking ground in Santa Monica in 2005. In 2007, Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss were honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammys. Shout! Factory is proud to present the Herb Alpert Signature Series, an ongoing campaign featuring deluxe reissues of his classic albums.
